How to negotiate with a dealer?

Ok, so ive done my research, i am going to buy a 2009 M-1000 sp. I see the suggested retail is around $10699.00 I will probably have half and finance the rest. I have read, and understand about not beating the dealer up to bad...wanting service and such. however its a tuff time so dont want to pay retail. I see where one guy on here bought one recently for $9500.00 New. Also I havent bought a NEW sled so this is new terretory to me. Questions? do you haggle as you would with a car dealer? how much can i expect to pay? Would i be better off getting my own financing or go with their's? Also should i wheel and deal, like try to get a new jacket, or gear for the sled? Or just negotiate on the sled? Any advice is welcomed!

One thing you have to do is have your duck's in order. Dont try to get something that just cant happen. You have to watch out for dealers because they try to use rebates to make it look like they are the ones loosing the $$$. Remember if they dont want to work with you, go look elsewhere. And they can look at it all next summer sitting there.

So.... Didn't know what I was talking about in the bog thread but might be more up my alley here. Shop more than one dealer. I'm guessing there are several dealers (maybe not around Fort Peck) with 09 M10s out there. Call and get their out the door price. Outdoor Motor Sports in Spearfish SD is a competitive dealer and isn't too far from Fort Peck. The number is 605-642-7731. Go to the horses mouth, ask for Chuck. He'll find you what you want for a price you'll like.

At least get them to throw in a 2.5 gallon jug of oil. When i tried to get a lower price they told me that they were selling for their break even point and absolutely could not go any lower:rolleyes:, but i got 2 gallons of oil, a hat, and 20% off everything in the store.

Thanks Bullcamp, that out the door price on the phone is probably a good idea, as when i go into the shop with that kid in a candy store look, its a dead giveaway. they know they have me!

there are people buying new 09 m1000's for 8500 and I've seen quite a few for $8,900. so if they can't come with in $500 of that go somewhere else for as cheap as possible.
PS I got mine in moscow ID for 9900 last January, good place to start. If I wanted service I would use idaho rigging in st maries or potlach ID, good guys.

Yea, a bit further to Spearfish.... Get more than one dealer involved and be patient. The guy that opens his mouth first, is the guy it costs money. Go in with the idea your going to drink some coffee or soda and take our time. Find a nice comfortable chair and kick back. Why would you want to spend $10000 quickly? Regardless if your financing or paying cash. It's an negotiation. If you don't ask for it, you don't get it. Period. Once you stop negotiating the deals done and that's it. If you want an extra belt or 15% off parts or a cover your done. Take your time. It's fun and when you leave you'll feel like you've gotten a good deal. The dealer will be happy because you'll tell all your buds what a good dude he is and you'll probably buy your next sled there too.

get financed first over the phone through dealer or ?.that way you dont get your hopes up while dry humping the new sleds in the showroom just to be let down if they deny credit.

you talking from experience:D

If Idaho riggin is close to 9k I would try to work them down but I think there knowledge and service is one of the better. I would go in and say right off " I've been thinking about a 09 m1000 seeings how guys are getting them for $8500 what are you selling them for". then when the tell you you should buy it, say" well what can you do I'm also interested in service, maybe we can work something out". it should be self explanatory from there, but they will fill like your going to be a customer instead of a pain. then once you get them as far as you think possible talk them into throwing in extras, (belt and oil at least). Most dealers will work you and say let me talk to my boss and see what I can do. listen to there offer and depending how close you they are. either ask them to do a little better or say I'll think about it. If you do like there price tell them I'll think about it and leave. But leave your phone number and a lower price you will buy it for and if they change their mind to give you a call and we'll make a deal. If they don't budge you can always come back and say I think service is more important and want to buy from them. then they are on the hook. Always leave to clear your thoughts and scramble theirs. The last thing a salesman wants to see is a sale walk out the door.

Go to Edge Performance in Ceour D Alene, Id. Ask for Darrick, as he is the owner. He is awesome to deal with and treats all of his customers very well. I have delt with him before on 2 or 3 sleds and I have always been happy. He really takes care of is customers before and after the sale.

What kind a deal did you get.

I have heard the same thing but have also heard him refered to as by polar. and my buddie that paid $12,500 for a 08 m1000 was kinda pi$$ed when the other buddie got the same sled at the same time for $11,800 in lewiston, and if you don't buy from him good luck on service. I didn't even buy from I R and its the best service I've had to date.

Freezeout,I have been there kicking tracks. he quoted suggested prices, however i dident get into negotiations becuase i was still researching. He tried real hard to sell me the new M8, just wasent real happy with the $11000.00 price tag. now that Im ready i will probably give him another try, between him and IR. Maybe i can make a good deal. I have done hard negotiations on used rigs before, just not on new sleds. I wasent aware there was that much room to play with. $10600-$8500 Thanks all for the good advice. hope to see you on the mountain.

Dealer facts

we are all loosing money right now paying to much interest so we are trying to move product.

Some facts they are only giving us 900 rebate on 09 M1000 and if you choose the 900 rebate that's a 1 year warranty and no finance deals.

I am a 1000 under invoice on my 09 m1000 that,s a 100 out of my pocket and I set up free. I will not give you price on hear just so as not to upset dealers but I can guarantee you it well above 8500. If some one is buying one for 8500 the dealer bought it from salvage at a discount. That is way over 2 g below invoice.

In state VS out of state

Looking at this it was more than likely one was res and one was none res.

sales tax 690.00
Title fee 8.0

I could be wrong but most dealers well I know I do I set price and stick with it. but it real easy when your loosing money to set how much you are willing to loose per sale.

I bought a new M8 162 standard last spring, Simmons skis, riser, skid plate, $10K out the door. That included tax, title, etc. I think all Cats come with plugs and a belt.

People are always piping up on SW about ridiculous deals but I haven't seen it, I called every dealer within 2 hour drive and they were all pretty close. A lot of people fail to mention the out the door price, tax, freight, title, etc is part of the price.

The dealers really don't have a lot of room to haggle, If you don't mind the drive I have heard good things about MM in Preston.

I bought from Wilson because it was closer and he had what I wanted.

You will probably get much better financing on your own.

Good luck and enjoy getting a new sled and have a great riding season!

Jan 7th 09 out the door said and done, 09 m1000 162 std already setup. $9,900. I used a MT address so no tax. but the sled has to be delivered to MT for legal tax reasons. The closest my WY dealer came was $11,200. after I worked him over and tells me I was screwing him. He doesn't have to sell to me and I still use him for work, If he came within 500 I would have bought from him. He also has many 08's still on the floor. I have my own business and loose at times, thats business. The guy that sold me my 09 may have lost but probably not as much as the other one he had sitting all year. and made money off me on parts.
