How to Lighten up a ZX Chassis

I have a 00 MXZ that I stretched out to a 144, and I am looking for ways to make it lighter to run a little better in the MTNs.

I ran it in Wyoming and it ran great but, I am going to Cooke City in about a month and I want to try lighten it up so I can climb to the good spots.

Mountain Fit hood is a must, then Boss highrise seat, raise and move handlebars forward. Get rid of anything else on the sled that's not needed.

Found the site.

Already moved forward and raised about 8 inches on the handlebar, that works awesome. I really cant afford a BOSS seat, is there any alternatives?

What Xrider said ^^^. Cut out the swaybar, port track.

I wouldn't port the track. I did it to mine last year and my sled didn't go as good, also they don't go on water very good either. Just my 2 cents worth.

Playing the lightweight game is very expensive but rewarding. Been there done that. I would just gut what ever you can, foam on hood, swaybar tighten up front shocks, put scratchers on the rear skid and remove the extra wheels, maybe a different hood and can. Other than that its going to get real expensive. Just do a few things to hold you over till you can afford to buy some newer iron. The new sleds are designed pretty good, most of them ride and handle better than the old lightweight mods. The new stock sleds are darn near the mod sleds of yesterday.

If you used extentions for the 144, I would find a way to use shorter ones and move the skid back 3.5". I have a '01 summit with 8" risers, boss seat, BR Teck hood, fabcraft trailing arms, set back skid and a 151, simmons skiis.

Simmons flex ski's made my 03 feel 50 pounds lighter in the steering.

Without spending alot .......

....... Heres what you can doo:
  • HPS silencer (this is the most $$$) $250 - 9 lbs
  • Hiperfax's $150 then you can remove ALL bogies - 6 lbs
  • Two wheel axle from "Iceage" $55 remove rear wheel - 2 lbs
  • Strip the hood of all foam, steel vents, and silicone in screen - 3 lbs
  • Remove the stock speedometer, speedo cable & brackett - 5 lbs
silicone in screen over the opening.
  • Remove sway bar - 4 lbs
  • Port track with one row of 1 inch holes down the center - 2 lbs
don't worry it won't hurt it.
  • Remove the pipe insulation & ceramic coat it $75 - 4 lbs
Coating it is a must for power, dont just remove insulation

Thats a loss of 35 lbs at a cost of $530 total

    Spend some more for ...............
  • Lightweight hood (I have a R&N w/ a rip I'd sell for $300) - 12 lbs
But shipping it to you would be spendy
  • BOSS Seat - ~$400 - 6 lbs
  • Fabcraft Moly arms ~$50 - 7 lbs
  • Rear suspension ~$400 (Canadian co.) - 9 lbs
  • Wave rotor $75 - 2 lbs
I did all these to my ZX, it weighed about 434 lbs dry(other mods also).
For performance in the mtns, I would spend some $$ with Big John, get 19/45 gearing.

Good Luck

Did this:
Lexan hood
Boss Seat
Sway bar
Tail light replaced with LED
Removed snow flap
Removed all but two boogies
I have 2 -8" rear idlers, inboard with offset axle kit.
Removed most foam
HPS can- put stocker back on because of noise though.

Originally I had dropped 45 lbs. However, the can added back 10 lbs and the 151x16 track is heavier than a 151x15. The difference in performance is worth it though.
