How to determine Garett turbo size?????

How can you tell the size of a garett turbo? Bought a '07 Apex from a dealer last week and they didnt know anything about the turbo setup other than it was a boondocker....... Can you tell if it has a head shim without removing the head? Yamaha is all new to me as i have been a loyal polaris fan for over 10 years but decided to make the swich this year....the compressor housing has numbers on it but im not sure how you translate those to figure out if its a 2554 or a 2668 or a 2871 turbo.... thanks!!!

I would be very cautious buying a turbo anything from someone who didn't know much about it...that being said, I don't believe the boondocker kit came with a headshim - and their website doesn't have it listed in the parts list. I'd plan on running high octane this year if I were you.

a quick search on google got me here: http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbobygarrett/tech_center/gt_basics.html

That might help you with figuring out what turbo you have. You can also give boondocker a call and chat with them. I had some issues with my Nytro and they were really friendly and extremely helpful.

there is a tag on the center section of the turbo which has a few numbers.. the longer number and call to a garret service senter will indicate which one. The 2860R came on my 07 kit. Also if you look close you can see the head gasket by the clutches, if there is a thicker piece of aluminum between 2 gaskets you are shimmed. take a rag and cleaning it up might help to see..

GEt the numbers off the tag on the center section and type them into google with the name garrett it most likely will yeild you the info you want. otherwise you can go to garretts website and get the dimensions for the inducer/exducer and pull the housings off the turbo and measure the wheel sizes.

Thanks for the info! Whats the Prime setup for this kit boost wise? Its set at 11 psi in the Boondocker box And what HP does that run around that much boost?

you need to tell us what turbo it is first a 2554 maxs at14-15lbs a 28rs 18-20lbs depending on motor work & elevation that will change a bit.
