How often should you replace the fuel filter?

What are the dealers charging to do this? I understand the filter is about $150. Just wondering on the labor. Does the dealer have to do it for the warranty to be good yet?

The owner of the machine is responsible for maintenance.

Anyone have an example of the tool that is used? Just talked to the dealer and you know they want you to bring it in and charge you and not have you find the tool to do it yourself.

I looked at the tools but it seems there are many of them......

Thanks-

The only real tool other than regular hand tools for a fuel filter replacement is the tool to release the connector at the tank.

like stated above how many miles do you put on a car before changing a fuel filter? when gas tanks were made of metal contamination was more of a problem. also the newer design of storage tanks at stations draw fuel from higher up in the tank as opposed to the old style which sucked it from the bottom. i would say unless your using contaminated containers to get your fuel the filter will easily out last the life of the sled. i pull the gas tank out of 20-30 cars a year to replace bad fuel pumps and they are all pretty much spotless clean. and these cars all usually have had over 100,000 miles of fuel ran through them if not more than 200,000 and many of these still have the original fuel filter.

I don't know about you guys but I stop at the pump and fill up on the way up the mountain. Not sure why you would need to run it through a pre-filter or why some guys insist on putting their fuel in a gas can and then fighting it at the trailhead. That seems to me to be just a great way to contaminate it or introduce water into your gas while filling up in a snowstorm in the parking lot.

It has been probably 25 years since I replaced a fuel filter on one of my cars.

Dealers of anything always seem to try to convince you to do something sooner than is needed. Look at oil changes for instance. None of the manufacturers to my knowledge are recommending 3,000 miles anymore but the dealers are still pushing it.

I think I'll follow the recommended maintenance schedule from the guys who have to stand behind my motor thank you very much!

When you summarize your sled with Stabil or whatever fuel stabilizer you use has to affect the fuel filter. I can not see it helping the filter flow if it were just filtering fuel. Also for the guys putting oil in their gas, cant see that being good for the filter either.
