How often should a guy clean his drive belt?

I read a post a while back about cleaning the drive belt in soap and water. I did it once and was amazed at what came off the belt. Could a guy scrub his belt after each ride or do you think that would hurt it over the long term?

no need to wash it..unless you get oil on it some how..??..the scotchbrite on the sheaves is something that is done often though..

read this...no washing of the belt after install...when new yes...but no need after unless of course ya got some oil on it.....

I read your link. It does not say the only time you need to clean the belt is to get rid of the mold agent. I stand by what I said. I service at least 30 clutch systems per season. Talk to my customers after I clean their clutches AND belt. Aluminum and oxygen produces aluminum oxide. it collects on the belt surfaces and inhibits proper belt grip. You can run your dirty belts if you wish, but if you want the best performance from your clutches, scrub your belts with scotch brite and then clean everything with hot soapy water.
