How much oil is your 9 using?

Just wondering guys, so how much oil does yours burn on a full tank of fuel? Mine burned 1.5 liters of oil per tank. Which in theory is half a tank of oil. The oil jug takes 2.8 liters of oil to fill. Does this sound adequate? Also it doesn't take much for the oil level to get down below that first pick up line that runs through the middle of the heads? What does that oil line feed?? I have a new fbf cable installed and oil line marks on pump line up properly. I'm sure everything is fine, just parranoid!! :rolleyes::beer;

that oil line is the feed for lubrication of the oil pump/water pump drive shaft gear that runs through the center of the block. that oil usage sounds about normal.

For each full tank of fuel I'm down between 1/4 and 1/3 tank of oil. I am set just on the lean side of the factory marks on the oil pump, cheers
Dan

In theory....

A tank of gas is basically 10 gallons, 10 gallons = 40 quarts, so if you use one quart of oil you would be running at 40:1. 1.5 quarts in 10 gallons would be 26:1, 2 quarts (half gallon) = 20:1.

The sweet spot between best performance and maximum protection seems to be around 35:1, tho 40:1 is still plenty safe.

I still haven't had a long enough ride to burn through a full tank to see what I am at, but I am just guessing I am running about 2 cups oil in 4 gallons of gas... So I can roughly say I would be running about 6 cups (1.25 quarts) to 10 gallons, which equals 32:1. At this I'm running strong with no bog and no black marks in the snow :D

( I couldn't tell ya how that pencils out in the metric system;):confused:)

The upper hose coming out of the oil tank goes down between the cylinders and feeds the oil/water pump cross shaft which is lubed in an oil bath, much like a 4-stroke motor. You dont have to worry if you go below that line, as long as you be sure to fill your tank back up before each ride to ensure you have plenty.

So if the oil line goes below that hose that feeds the oil pump/water pump drive shaft, that doesnt sound right. It just must lubricate the shaft, so it probably doesn't need much oil. It's not like it burns at a steady rate.... is this correct
Big D?
Thanks,

that oil level in the block shouldn't go down unless the seals are leaking. most should stay in there. it basically tops it off when you fill your resivoir. I didn't design it. that is just the way it is.

yes

Yes, that line just feeds the oiler/waterpump and doesn't actually burn any oil, just lubricates, and as was posted earlier, if you run below that line it doesn't really matter, as long as you top up again before the next ride.

I figure I'm using slightly less than 1 quart for every full tank of gas burned ....

So even though 05's and 06's have different bottles, is it the same system?
That is the hose which goes to the brass fitting on the front of the block above the oil pump, correct?

just watch that brass fitting..mine popped out one day...oil all over the place!

I found mine was using what seems to be alot of oil aswell, i too have the FBF cable, i will have to look next time i will top up the fuel tank and oil tank and go for a little ride and see what happens

is there only one line coming off the bottom of the oil tank..just want to make sure there is a line that i am missing that might be leaking or something like this

Correct, only 1 line coming out of the bottom of the tank, that line delivers oil to the injection pump itself. The upper oil line is what lubes the cross-shaft.

Good point on the brass fitting paramuir... mine walked it's way out last year, what a mess! I took it off, and lightly drove a round punch inside to make it a tighter fit, and then put a healthy bead of Black hi temp silicone around it, no problems since.
