How much for a new 800 pro engine?

It was actually a 2013 with 4800 km on it. Extra, complete 3 yr non Polaris warranty purchased when I bought the sled new. Bill for just engine rebuild $6000, with initial diagnosis and extras bringing it to ~$6800. The work order for the rebuild was not signed by myself.

Those "aftermarket" warranty's can be hit and miss. They will do anything to get out of covering the bill. I know I had one on a Doo, which the dealer was good enough to fight to have it covered when I lost a motor on a etec. When I purchased the sled I thought I was actually getting a BRP warranty but it was some power sport one. If there is still warranty left on that one you have I would contact them and tell them you want to cancel the remainder of the coverage and be reimbursed for the remainder of the term as they won't cover anything that happens anyhow.

When I purchased my Polaris I was offered something similar again but I was already getting the 3 year bumper to to bumper and didn't want to go through that mess again.

My issue is not so much with the warranty company denying the claim (although frustrating/disappointing) but more with the dealer's decision to do a $6500 fix on the sled before receiving the verdict. Had they waited to find the claim denied, I would definitely have pursued options (crate motor, sell as is) other than most expensive (a complete rebuild). And no, I haven't paid the bill yet, have just been trying to figure out where I stand.

Hi Kaytee,
I bought a new, never been started Polaris crate motor last year from the US. It came with flywheel and recoil. The cost was about 3,400 usd plus $100 shipping and then 6% tax at the border. In your case, you would be about $4,000 cdn and then you have to install yourself. I'm in BC.

A good comment would be that you were never given the choice to pursue other options and you would have bought a motor and put it in yourself had you the chance.

I can't give you much advice on how to present your case but definitely speak directly to the owner and be calm and to the point and have proof to back up what you say. i.e.-quote on new Polaris motor etc.

I would not be paying the bill for starters. I would want some explanation from the warranty company as to why the engine is not covered. Is there something you are not telling us about the engine failure?

Seems to me you paid for warranty coverage. I know I did and I would expect it to be fully honored unless there was some degree of fault on my part. Having the warranty company follow through on their contractual obligation to fix your machine would be the first round for me.

Beyond that debacle, why would the dealer choose to rebuild instead of replace when the rebuild is 50% more expensive? How on earth do you get to $6800 on a rebuild of a 2 cylinder engine, that is insanity when the best guy in the business is doing rebuild for less than half that amount and covering the work with a 3 year warranty, one he reportedly honors.

The fact that they did that much work without notification or approval is really going to put them in a tough spot. I would make them remove the rebuild, provide me with a suitable core and go a different route. Essentially insist they return the sled to you as it was delivered to them since they were not authorized to make the repairs they made.

Do you get 10 years warranty on that engine? You should for that price.

I would personally be willing to settle for about $2500, the cost of a competitive rebuild IF there is a legitimate reason the warranty company shouldn't pay.

So I called the local dealer here near me to price a crate motor $4933 cdn they told me an that Polaris doesn't do core exchange on their stuff. Seems like someone is making some good money.

To understand a 6000 dollar rebuild in BC you have to understand 12% tax, plus 5% shop supplies, plus 10 to 20 % (maybe more) above list on parts, plus shipping if remote, plus a rounded up # from the payee maybe.

$800 dollars for diagnostics and extras is a little open ended but both belts up here are a 500 dollar bill if rounded up with a good guy price and taxes.

Not saying it's right just possible. If the invoice was cut and pasted some of us might just say "bin dere dun dat shouda phoned these guys". I can phone 5 different dealers within an hr of me and get 5 different prices for the same part.
Pisses me off but it's the same in the Auto world. Just yesterday I needed to buy some special antifreeze. 3 calls 3 prices for the same brand jugs in one town. $29.95, 25.41 and 17.21. I needed 3 so you know where I went.

OP I feel for you. Good luck.

the shop has the responsibility to repair the motor with the lower cost option unless they contact you first to advise you. that is why they call them service advisers. if the cost was more than it would be for an assembly they should have let both you and the insurance company know. the 6500 dollar price was probably for the warranty company, I would suggest going to the dealer with your concerns and see if they will adjust he bill down to a reasonable amount and get rid of the diagnostic fee. because that is usually included in the labor time guide , if they are not reasonable then play hard ball. I have worked in dealerships for years and this approach usually will get the results you are after.

So, plus taxes, shop supplies, a bit of labour,,, probably more than $6000. In BC.

Most Doo dealers up here have a rebuilt or two on the shelf. 2800 ish exchange but if you took out the lower case with a piston bit (like most) or pooched a cylinder you get charged more.
Better but stiil, install, taxes etc. anywhere from 4 to 5 grand.

We pay a lot to play up here.
