how much body protection do you ride with boondocking

Funny story... ran into a kid in the parking lot this winter looking for people to ride with. He asked me if we wore beacons and had shovels. I replied that we did. This kid then rides all day without a helmet or gloves... Good thing he had a beacon though lol.

What do I need an avy pack for? I used to think I needed it. I had one way before all you guys decided they were cool. If you ride smart there is no reason you should need an avy pack. In 15 years of riding these big mountains we have NEVER set off a slide that buried someone, never had to dig anyone out of an avy.

My current issue is riding friends that are taking too many chances above treeline. I will probably have to stop riding with some of them because they take chances I am not willing too. They see it differently and hate trying to follow me in the thick trees. I simply avoid the avy terrain, no need to haul around a big pack that only has a slim chance of being beneficial in the first place.

To each there own sir, I just hope I never have to come dig you out or do CPR on you to save your life..... and you never have to go threw any of that to save "one of your buddies"

Have you ever been in the vicinity of avys?

As much as I stay out of any avy terrain, it doesn't mean it can't happen. Avy's can happen in steep tree areas as well. Even if it's not a big slide, the airbag could help soften tree impact. Every once in a blue moon I'll get on an open slope that has potential to slide. Just knowing I'm doing everything possible to minimize death is worth it to me. The one time I was in an avy was the one time I didn't have my avy pack with me since 2009. A slope I've never seen slide in the last 12 years I've been riding. Luckily I rode out of it, cause I would have been buried 6ft deep.

...and lightning could strike you. It has been thundering during our last few spring rides.

There are thousands of ways you can die. Dying in an avalanche is extremely rare. Every time I see it happen it is VERY easy to see the mistakes those folks made to end up in that situation.

Well, I have watched your riding videos and chances are, you would never even be able to find me in the woods son.

This notion that we defy death by riding is silly. It isn't nearly as dangerous as you guys like to play it up to be, unless you are making bad choices. I see that a LOT more than I see avy bags saving people.

This has turned into an interesting thread! I have to admit that IMO.... I think it's crazy to not wear an Avy bag.... Especially if you ride in areas prone to slide... BUT on the other hand thats their choice and who am I to tell anyone else what I think they should do! I have a wife and kid at home and I supply a major portion of the income so there is no way I can justify not wearing one! I can afford the truck, trailer, sled and all the rest of the crap so I have no reason not to. I realize the chances of losing my life in an Avy are slim but as long as there's a chance I'll wear the bag. I feel like I owe it to myself , my family and my riding buddies! at times the bag feels like a small person is on my back but I guess I've gotten used to the weight. I have no illusions that a pack is a guarantee I'm coming home but it has to up my odds! Probably the same reason I wear a seat belt! Every time I read about an Avy death where a bag was not worn or able to be deployed I always wonder if it could have been the difference. Maybe or maybe not???? I can't take that chance! That's just my way of thinking and by no means should everyone else think the way I do!!!

Fox shin guards and a BCA bag. I need to be able to move when I'm riding and it already feels like I have enough stuff on as it is.

I use a Fox roost guard. Cheap, light, and good front and back protection. Doesn't have side protection, but I have yet to have a hit there in 12yrs, just usually chest. Had a tek vest and use it one day. Sits in my basement collecting dust. Couldn't stand how bulky it was and it chaffed my neck and limits vertical arm movement. I tried to modify the shoulder area which helped, but still too uncomfortable for me.

Used EVS shin/knee guards for years but they are getting torn up so I just picked up some force field knee protectors. Kinda pricey but seem like they are gonna be real comfortable and not bulky at all.

Well I keep riding... Haven't seen you show up yet.

I thought your offer to Jeff at Thunder Mountain was pretty funny too. I rode with him last weekend. He would likely school you too. CLEARLY, you are a stud rider though...LOL

661 Pressure Suit and Leatt knee guards.
Snowpulse Avy Bag and Fly F2 Carbon Helmet.
I tried wearing a Leatt brace but found it too bulky. I want to try an Atlas brace though, they look a lot less restrictive.
