how much air in snow

i left the parking lot in the groomer last night at 9:00 for a 6 hour run.

i'm drinking beer right now at 10:15 am after a LONG shift of too much snow.

so, going over secesh summit above mccall, I was cutting 18 inch banks over my old tracks.

if i'm taking out 18 inchs of air out of the snow, how much new snow has there been since saturday????

supposedly 10 more inches in the valley today, which means i need to back out again tonight.

Or was that yesterday?? or tomorrow????

Wish I had the brains to calculate the amount of air compressed out of the snow by your groomer. I bet Herb could figure it out... :D

Sounds like we need to start a "dr miller thirst fund" from those of us who REALLY appreciate the good work you do. I wouldn't want you out there getting thirsty-

Thanks for the snow update, and the great grooming. I'd say all the increased sled traffic (measured by beverage, food, fuel, and hotel stay increases) should have a Doug tax taken off the top for ya-

BTW- I lost your # in my old phone- got a new one now- call me

i do indeed accept bribes, i mean, ummm, tips.

yeah, tips.

believe it or not, i have a tip jar sitting with Butch and Margaret in Warren Idaho. Feel free to donate.

I will PM the blaser dude. he is 2moto incarnate!!!!!

You need a tip jar at Lardo's, Chevron, Maverick...

Heck, we should just put one at each trailhead parking lot with a sign that says "If the groomings good, leave a tip"

Or just set up a solar powered mini fridge with a drop box door- peeps could just drop in the cans of beverage for your long nights. You might consider the Red Bull type stuff for starting the run, and the other for the post groom rehydration...

Well fresh snow is anywhere from 1 to 5 pound per cubic foot, once it sets up to a firm consistency, it will settle out at about 12 pounds per cubic foot. Then it changes into a much firmer stuff when it has a lot of snow piled on, from 25 to 50 pounds per cubic foot. The super hard snow at the bottom of a glacier is 55 pounds per cubic foot, and water is 62.5 pounds per cubic foot.

Basically, your groomer probably crushes it down 5 times more dense.

Yha, I'm avoiding real work.

Some farmer told me that for every foot of snow, you got an inch of water. That gives you 8.3% by volume....sorta. Water expands 30% when frozen right? That gives you 11% water 'when its cold'....

So for every liter of snow, you have about 890ml of air?
