Just curious, since we have no way of knowing how many letters are written from the opposition, how many of us have submitted letters to the USFS?

Good idea 2,
I have written a notebook full of letters and attended every meeting held in my district, every meeting, not just the forest plan ones. I deal with the FS everyday.
I just hope that the letters are met with a more open agreeable attitude than the face to face meetings. I swear you can see those poor people's eye's glaze over and hear the thought go through their heads "go ahead, blather on, I get paid to be here".
Sigh.
I don't think you have to be a tree hugging reactionary to work for FS (I sure hope not anyway!) But I think alot of them are just writing a Forest Plan because the boss told them to. I'm afraid I don't think many of them put much heartfelt concern in place. Which is a shame really. I would rather lose my riding area access to hate or miss-information than to apathy.
Hopefully a box full (or two or three!) of letters will help. Seems to be about what we can do.
Isn't it unfortunate that Foresters aren't voted into office? Oh, wait, I forgot what state I live in, sorry.:face-icon-small-dis

Ride On, Bag

I've used the links provided here, on BRC and on SAWS to send about a dozen or so over the last year.

I don't understand why every sledder doesnt take advantage of these opportunities. You click, fill in your info, type out your response and hit send.

I would think that sledding and keeping our areas open is worth 5 mins of your life !!

Join BRC - Join SAWS - Join WSSA - give a small donation when you can. Write just 1 letter.
Even just a little effort from a lot of people will make a huge difference.

36 different people have viewed this thread and only 8 have sent out letter or e-mails.

Ya Brew, I think we're pretty much screwed at this point. I still have faith in our fellow riders though, I think that they are working on their letters, just trying to get the wording right before sending them off. Turn the passion that you have for riding into "passion to keep on riding", we have until Sept. 28th in regards to the C.O.W. revision plan.

We need to remember to send letters to politicians that we think will be on our side as well. This is very important especially since the way these land use actions are accomplished is to slip them into a larger bill and will be overlooked if not made aware that there are constituents interested and with thoughtful reasoning that they can bring up.

There is some cheap action implementation, azz covering, and true bias going on, on the part of the forest service…. They are trying to show action by trumping snowmobile use and adding regulation/limits. The truth is 90% of sleds are used on the existing road system.

The fact is that for many reasons, stated and cited in the land use section, over the snow travel should be the preferred method of access into remote areas. The damage done by the road, trail system and its users, including me (by truck, bike, and on foot) is more detrimental than the 1-3% (est) of sledders able to and willing to go into remote areas.

Bottom line is that there is an overwhelming amount of government employees and general public that believe the general paradigm that snowmobiles, or things motorized, are bad and the people that ride them should be, well; punished.

I don’t think we will change that as there is a growing portion of even sledders that support the opposition even if indirectly for other reasons.

But try and copy your letters and send them to several politicians from both parties.

Just a friendly reminder, we have one more week to send letters concerning the C.O.W. revision plan for those who care, after that it's out of our hands. :face-icon-small-sad

Been reading the thread on losing Bearpaw again this year due to mother nature washing out the road, beyond our control, alot of comments about how we can regain access. This is just a taste of what it will be like if we loose our other riding areas due to enviromentalist, something that IS in our control ( if we send enough letters defending our right to ride, and keep these areas open) We will get Bearpaw back in time, but once we loose our public lands they're gone for good. Just something to think about while you're writing your letters. :face-icon-small-win
