HOw can I compensate for low octane gas?

I have used the torco for 2 seasons both on my sleds and my dirt bikes and I can tell especially in my KTM 300 with cut race head used to ping ,,not now!! On my pro with the 13:7 head ocassionally I would go into det, now I just add alittle mix and no more det, but mabe I just have a ecu with more timming or a TPS slightly out ,what ever? It fixed my problem

Low octane

Here's a bit of help on this subject.

When you can't get high octane (91+) fuel or when the fuel is in doubt. Put your machine in ethanol mode (jumper for older machines) (through the display for newer), purchase regular octance fuel and add polaris fuel treatment. In many cases the machines run better with more power in this configuration. I'll try and get the polaris part number. It does not void the warranty or hurt your machine. However, the use of any "octane booster" other than polaris fuel treatment is not recoomened, could damage your engine, and could void your warranty.

Hope this helps,

Cheers

How many sleds will there be? Have you talked to someone at the place? maybe if you explain your situation they would let you stash a can of race gas there ahead of time to blend in a couple gallons of race with their gas in each sled. The only effective way to bring octane up is to mix with race or avgas. If you're trying to bring 85 up to 91 octane booster is not going to bring you anywhere near that, it won't even get you up to 87 probably. Filling your sleds with straight race gas to start with is another option, when you refill if there is about three gallons or more of race left in the tank you should be at 91 octane.

Don't overcomplicate it. Either run low octane with the eth switch on. Sled may be down a bit on power or deto a little bit but they're made to work like this with safeguards in place.
OR if you really only need a tank of the low octane, anyd have to fix it up, pack a Jerry can of 112,114 or 119 race gas to mix

So after all that, is it better to run non-eth 87 in non-eth mode, or run 10% eth 91 in the eth mode?? Trying to decide what to do from now on. The eth issue is getting worse. Just wait untill the epa gets 15% through... Nobody will have a warranty anymore unless you own a Porsche :face-icon-small-sho ??

Yep I knew that part regarding 85 vs. 87 and I am probably overthinking it I just don't want to hurt my sled.

With 1/2 tank of 91 and 1/2 tank of 85 we would still be at 88 octane. That should be safe enough.

Seriously, we get the ****tiest ethanol gas here in California, it runs fine, it is all minimum 10% ethanol.

You will be fine.

Also, for future reference, octane doesn't combine linearly, 85 + 91 does not equal 88, it equals 86 or maybe 87.

What does Sta-bil do for it and are you talking the new ethanol blend they came out with (blueish green) or the standard red stuff? I have always used the standard red stuff for summer storage by the way.

For the most part except for a few miles at each end we will be above 10,000feet.

Sorry for the late reply cateye... But most fuel additives dont raise much. Maybe a tenth or two tenths of a point. Adding sta-bil will increase the btu's back to a happier range on old crappy fuel.
