How are the CR 500 setups working

You may have had a bad temp sensor? Those two yellow wires into the small black disk. I cut the auto sensor off and wired in a simple on/off switch. Before I installed it I tested it. That probe heats up like a burner in your oven. It got so scalding hot you could not even touch it. That heat is conductive in the aluminum body. The entire carb is warm. Mine worked perfectly. Zero carb ice.

I must have had issues with mine then, can you order just the probe? If they do infact work that well I wish there was a cheaper way to get power on these 500's. Running the coolant back there isn't to difficult but the carb heater would be much easier. How many watts is that heater pulling?

I am not sure on the wattage. I looked over the info on it, but no wattage listed. My stator is 100W. Enough for a couple different uses. I am pretty sure you can buy the probe separate. It is not connected solid to the wiring harness. I would go to a KTM dealer and see if they can pull up Carb heater break down of parts. I am betting you can buy the probe separate.

I know this thread is old but I'm sure folks will answer still. Now that there's been another season under the books since this thread, what's the best way to go for the carb icing issue?

I was considering this:
http://www.avid-products.com/custompage.asp?pg=snowbike
plus a digital temp gauge, carb jacket, and maybe engine shield for the CR500 I'm hoping to ride this winter.

Having said that, I'd love to see a direct link somewhere to the KTM heater as mentioned. I can't seem to find it. Maybe getting a 100W stator and the heater would be easier?
Wallace, I'll be bugging you shortly...

Ktm heater is a no go even with the jacket just go with avid and call it a day... Temp gauge is important I run it on all my bikes .. But I found having a switch to turn it on and off rather than using a stat was the way to go.... I am going tunnel cooler so I am going back to a stat...

I run the KTM heater with a jacket on my 300. It isn't really enough some days but I'm only into it $25 so I don't mind dealing with a bit of icing occasionally. However, I believe the 500s have more of a problem with icing than the 300. I would just go with the Avid.

Powerdynamo makes a high output stator (~100W) and electronic ignition setup for the KX500. Its a universal setup that they adapt to a lot of motors and it could definitely be adapted to the CR500. The basically start with a blank stator and flywheel, machine in the right taper/features for the motor, then adapt their ignition system to it.

This guy is the one that got them to make the KX500 version. He's pretty knowledgeable on the system, but he needs some encouragement from CR500 people to try and do a CR version. Sounds like the system works pretty well though, and they make a lightweight flywheel version too. Timing is also infinitely adjustable. All for under $500.

It would sure be nice to know the timing curve on those things
