Hospital bill - what's wrong with healthcare

My wife had to have her gall bladder removed, and here are some charges:

approx: $8k just for the hospital stay, and she was in and out in about 5 hours, 6 max.

The week before we had to take her to the ER at about 8 p.m. at night, and she had to stay in the hospital through about 6 p.m. that next day waiting for surgery she never had. This total was about $3500...why is this less?!

These numbers don't even incluce the bill from the surgeon, anesthesiologist, or lab reports.

And of course, our insurance offers no preferred providers in a 50 mile radius.

THIS IS WHAT'S WRONG WITH HEALTHCARE!

Had the same procedure couple years ago. Total cost after everything was about $6500 and I thought that was high. Your wife's costs sound rather high. I would make sure and ask the billing dept. for an itemized list of ALL charges.

One of the things that pisses me off the most is they often charge people more if you have insurance than if you had none.

There are a variety of problems with current health care. Unfortunately, none of which will be fixed by Socialized Medicine.

i know it's messed up, but everyone wants quality and in this day quality isn't cheap.

That is exactly right!

I paid over 20K for my twin girls. I thought it was kinda wierd but they charged us for two ultra sounds everytime she had one. ya there are two babies but come on. there is no setup time for the second kid or anything all they have to do is move the little wond thing over 6 inches. I ended up paying for 12 ultra sounds!

I take it you have insurance? Does anyone think the insurance companies actually pay those numbers. I think they negotiate it all down through deals etc. but the consumer pays deductible and thier share of the inflated numbers.

Once in a blue moon they will adjust your bill if you can't pay it. I had my gall bladder out two winters ago, bout as much as yours cost. Had kidney surgery two months ago and I still haven't paid for all of that. One night in the hospital, meds, and a recovery room (which I didn't even have! I was in a big room with about 20 other beds) cost almost $17,000. And that's not including the anesthesiologist or surgeon costs!

One hospital actually canceled out a $1000 bill I had. I was shocked, they said after looking through my account I was eligible. None of the other hospitals have done that for me, they send you to collections if you don't pay the full balance in two months. Even if you're making payments, they still send you to collections. Pretty messed up.

my wife is in the health care business so i think things are fine the way they are.
LMAO!!!! Well, as long as life is good for your wife I guess it doesn't matter.

Dang, only in the good ole America..

LAME

Sister was in the hospital recently.
Was better and was told she could go home...........................after
she paid them 300 bucks for the meds she needed to take with her.
The ins co wouldn't pay for them.
Instead the ins co told her to stay in the hospital till the meds were gone.
So instead of paying the 300 the ins co paid for four more days in the hospital:confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused:

wtf

This is where they need to try and find some way to get health care
reform to work....Blaming everything on the Ins co's makes no sense....
Just the millions spent on records is astounding! Why cant everything be
entered into a computer and filed away?
Where do all these costs come from? Is anestheia that expensive?
How much goes off the top to administrators? Malpractice? Where
does all this $$$ go? This is what congress should be looking into....
