Honest opinions on 08 nitro mtx

Considering an addition to the stable if I can swing it. I own an 08 Dragon 800 now. I'm thinking of letting the girlfriend use it so maybe it will last longer
Anyway, curious what everyone thinks of theirs. Any real quirks a person should be aware of? I rode one for just a short while and loved it. Didn't get to test the deep snow handling though. I'm told some different skis are a must? Is that the consensus? I would consider the c&a xtx skis if that is the case. Any clutching issues or running issues?
Of course I will be adding all the Skinz goodies. I know I know some of you think they are ugly, but if they work like they do on the Poo I won't hesitate to add them.
This feels weird, it's been awhile since I've been on a Yami.
Thanks for any input. :beer;

ski's

I love my Nytro, a little time required to get used to riding it but not to bad. Ski's are a must. The wide simmons look ugly but work really good in all types of snow. I seen a stock Nytro with a 162"x16" maverick track off an apex and it made a big improvement in deep snow. Hope this helps.

I really enjoy my nytro. I dont have a lot of experience on to many other sleds but I ride with a guy on an m8 and can do every thing he can do. I usually get outclimbed by a bit but he weighs 40lbs less than I do, and has probably 10 more years of experience. Mine is stock except for handlebar risers and mtn tamer rear suspension and is a blast in the powder.

It does dart a lot, and have heavy stearing on the trails to the good stuff. This might be an alignment issue but my one ski is pretty messed up (long story), like you said I would like to try the C&A xtxs with dual carbides to see if this helps.

I would recommend stiffening the front subframe, I ruined mine (yes the same long story) and it cost quite a bit to replace it. The 09s are gusseted, but nothing any fab shop couldnt do.

I love, love, love, love, love, my Nytro too! I have modded it with the West Coast Sleds front suspension. I love my sled! I wasn't sure how I would like not having my sway bar on but it handles so much better in the powder without them and I can turn on a dime now too. I sooo love my sled! It's definitely not a trail sled, lots of darting if you're not careful, but I'm getting used to it. I also have the Mt Tamer rear suspension, 4 inch risers, and snow eliminators. Man, I love this sled!! I love how it handles in the powder now with the mods. Next season I'll put the wider skis on too. It's such an awesome sled, you won't be disappointed.

Oh...and I have I said how much I realllly love my sled??!! :D

I had a 04 800 rmk 144, one day I went for a ride with my buddies 08 nytro and it was really rough out. I was almost getting kicked off my sled and then my buddy blew by me with his Nytro. I couldn't beleive it. About two hours later I blew up my 800 and was so pissed off. All he could say was blah blah blah should have bought a 4 stroke blah and I didn't believe him. Until I rode his 08 Mtx.. The torque was awesome and then I realised that the suspension was awesome. But it was really tippy. But after riding my sled 100 miles + you get use to it. I know an 08 rmk is in a different league than an 04 but I was just giving you my 2 cents.

Right now I wouldn't ride anything else :D .. weeellll except a turbo'd Nytro :D

Thanks for the reply's. Sounds like all positive reviews. Nothing like that over on the Polaris forum right now
aksnomachinechic, I glad to hear you love your sled :D
I can handle a little extra weight if the sled is really dependable. The little riding I did on it, I couldn't really notice the weight and it sure feels like more than 130hp.
Keep the reviews coming I appreciate all input,
Thanks

I also love riding my Nytro but expect to drop some coin into it because it does not deliver its full potential in stock form in 08. There is a ton left on the table performance wise on these sleds and once you try a modded one you'll never want a stock one. Look for a used sled with a real track and suspension as well as lots of lightweight stuff. It'll save you money in the end.

the first 3 days i rode it i wanted to take it back to dealer. felt tippy, darty, and heavy. the stock track is terrible.

I've been ear to ear grins ever since. i have stage 2 supercharger, with 162 2.5 mtn extreme track, apex rails, fuel system upgrade, simmons gen 2 skiis.

stock, i probably wouldn't buy one. you get pretty good reliability out of a 700polaris rmk which would probably outclimb a well set up stock nitro.

deep snow is awesome with my nytro, the deeper the better, carvs awesome sidehills awesome. cold fricken thing to ride on a long cold trail, handwarmers are not great, suspension is great, fuel milage even with boost is awesome, small tank sucks but usually enough, rear exaust ruins the use of tunnel for fuel. it can be done but still not great.

with boost, the suspension changes i had to make made it feal heavy on trails but needed to do this to keep the front end down while climbing. on any sled with high horsepower it is tough to climb like a mountain goat and boondock easily on same supension settings in my opinion. kinda like putting a quarter mile dragster in a nascar race. it just takes a minute if your planning a long day of tree riding and not much for huge climbs to let out the limiter strap, and back off the rear weight transfer rods.

things i look forward to are a tunnel, seat, under tunnel exhaust, rear light suspension.

these can be alot lighter but costly. it is easy to drop about 80lbs but expensive.

hope this helps,

ps on the darting

3 out of 5 guys that tried out my sled with stock skiis got thrown off one side and sled went the other way,

simmons gen 2 = different sled. you honestly wouldn't believe the difference, cant explain it, you gotta try it. you can let go of the handlebars at 140km/hr on the trail now and stays stable and jitter free, turning in deep snow is awesome now, used to have a hard time turning back uphill even on a small hill, small hill meaning almost level. now the skis hold it up very well and can side hill under no throttle alot better.

Ya gotta say my genIIs work awesome even without the sway bar!!

I will probably get booted from the yami club but I had the 08 nytro with everything you could do. boost tunnel front and rear skid gen 2 skis track boost, you get the picture. Would I buy another one????Maybe. I found the sled awesome in the powder, very easy to throw around. when the snow was set up I found it hard to go where I wanted to go. Going into turtle mtn any side hilling on hard pack was very difficult. Setup????maybe. Plus the going down hill was always an adventure. VERY much like the rev...toboggan.
I was in love with the power, which is the main reason for considering another one, but I would like something even lighter and easier to throw around not just in soft snow. I do not have the strength I had when younger so that might be the difference. But if I had to choose between light and easy or straight power, I think the next time I will go with light. I spent over $35,000.00 to build the sled and was happy other than the setup snow handling. I know with the D-8 or M-8 and boost(hard to go backwards) I will not have the reliability I had with the 4-stroke but I hated being to tired to try harder pokes on set up snow. As you get older more compromises must be made....Hope this helps...........02

sweet nyyyyyytro

i too like the nytro its a rocket especially in the deep stuff. Scott at diamond s is to blame . He built one of his 450 lbrs for me and only complaint is i cant ride it everyday. he builds a terrific chassis, this is my third one, and still have the fisrt two. good luck!!!

I am also considering a Nytro mtx and I have found these responses helpful. I am coming off an xp 800 154 which I like, but I can not stop thinking about the Nytro. Where I live I can not rent one for the day and the dealer will let me try one but only on the local trails, not a good indication of the mountain capability of the sled. For me a boosted sled is out of my budget but maybe a track upgrade or some other minor tweaks are possible. How would you guys rate the climbing ability? What other sleds are comparable, can it climb like an 02 RMK 800, an 01 summit 700, a dragon 700, an m7, or something else. I know there is a learning curve to each sled and the nytro weighs more than my xp and the horsepower of a four stroke is different. I really would like to know what the Nytro compares to from guys who ride em and love em. :)

Thanks again everyone, you are awesome! :beer; Great info and first hand experience.
I'm more of the boondocking type, with a little technical climbing thrown in here and there.
Can anyone tell me if the approach angle can be adjusted by changing shock location on the Yami's like Poo does? I noticed for 2010 they really reduced the angle.
More thanks to you all.
