Homemade Sled Deck?

Hey guys i'm looking into building a sled deck for myself and was just wanting some input. Id buy a new aluminum one but money is tight and i can get the new steel for next to nothing and fab it all myself to save quite abit of money. I'm planning on mounting it in my 93 sierra 1500. I'm also looking into putting leaf springs off a 2500 that has 1 or 2 more leafs than my stock 4 to help with the sagging of the rear end. My concern is maybe the truck is to small compared to a diesel to have a loaded deck on it. What do you guys think, is it a disaster waiting to happen or can the truck handle it.

Just build it!! The old 1500 will be fine. Don't over engineer your deck! Build it to be light and strong!

A buddy and I built mine last year. Make sure you gusset it at the proper stress points. I put mine in the wife's half ton Dodge and in my diesel. Either way it works. It's light and strong as stated above. They are pretty simple really. The hardest part we dealt with was the storage rack for the ramp. Good luck!!!

maximum payload is 1,619 lbs. You need to add in the weight of passengers, gear, the sled deck and the sleds.

Your going to figure out very quickly your over weight. The extra leafs will help keep the truck from squatting but that's about it. A 3/4 or 1 ton truck is going to have MUCH larger axles, hubs, bearings, brakes, diffs, housing.....You get the idea.

But this doesn't stop people from trying stuff like this all the time. I rebuild or replace broken and damaged rear axles, bearings, diffs several times a year from being overloaded. Eric

You don't need a diesel pickup. If you can't afford a sled deck you can't afford a diesel truck. Up keep is 2X on a diesel. Your 93' has 20 years of ware on it and now you want it to be more then it was new????
Your 1/2 ton will be the first truck to the accident. Get umbrella insurance to protect your family. You are changing a pickup and knowingly using it for what it was not designed. Hope you don't live around here. JMO
