Homemade Cans? anyone made theirs? lets see!

I made a can for my sled last year. no baffles or packing, just a striaght pipe. way to loud, so to the garbage it went..haha

Lets see what you guys have came up with.

My buddy up in PG made one out of aluminum for his 800 Vertical Escape a couple years back. It was nice and light. Only problem was when it split, then melted his boot and belly pan. Think he runs a Rumblepack now!:D

I was thinking steel, then painted or coated for protection from corrosion. And I was going for a "The Thing" design. AAEN sells alot of material for making your own can. And ebay is even better once you know what you need. Or for free a scrap bin at a shop, or some friends

I made a list of what I'd need for my 800R.

-12" of 2 1/4" steel tube
-12" of 2 1/4" preforated tube
-1 2 1/4" 90degree sharp bend
-12" of 5 1/4" tube
-12x12" steel sheet.

this is more than enough material, just incase of boo boos:D

Find out how much room you have, diameter and length of can...

then call JAWS pipes and order a build your own kit. They'll make the canister the length and diameter that you want along with the inlet diameter.

It gets sent with a couple pieces of tubing one is pre-bent u-tube, the other straight, and it also comes with a buncha spring tabs.

$175??

I was thinking of that approch, but im sure Jaws has a kit for my sled. I want to make my own, for under $100. I want to be able to claim it as my own work.

Of course, stainless would be the best. I would look at the HPS can for the new Ski Doos. It looks very simple, just like your describing. I might try putting a small reflector can between the pipe and the 90.

ive seen someone make one out of a small glasspack muffler from the autoparts store once. just cut it down and added the proper size and bent pipes for inlet and outlets. it didnt look to bad b ut it was quite loud.

I've heard that the tighter you pack the glasspack or stainless wool, what ever your using, the quiter it is. the less you pack it, the louder. So those vehical kits your talking about must be packed really loose, or a small dia. body.

I think I'd use the glass for the packing. I have no idea whats inside other cans though.

A friend of mine made one out of a thrush glass pack. The outlet was tilted slightly forward and would scoop up the snow until it quit running then he would fire it up and out came a big snow plug. A few jokes were made then he made some changes to the outlet and it worked ok after that. I just wonder if it actually made less horsepower with that on.

One could make a custom front dump can to get around the deep powder boggggg. Like the cats that dump in the ski well.Or put a deflector in front of the outlet like many other sleds have.

I know a guy who made one from a small glass-pack. It looked nice, it sounded nice. Problem is he lost about 30 HP. He threw it away and put on a Mbrp. Very few cans will increase Hp but a bad can will decrease Hp. I would spend the money on something proven.

Thanks Fassteddie! Here's another closeup of the homeade ones. Hope this helps a little!

Better take that one down! hehe

From what I seen, there would have been a performance gain when they hit the snow.

This thread reminds me of when my grandfather bought his powder extreme way back when. The guy he bought it from had homeade triple stingers on the factory triple pipes. Holy fawk, it was LOUD!!!. Those stingers lasted exactly 1 ride, before a dg stinger pack got put on.

just buy one that is professionally made. they put lots of hours into testing to see what gives the best hp gains and what doesnt work. unless you own a dyno i wouldnt really risk it.

i made my own glass pack with a few slits. i now have 40% hearing loss in my right ear. take your time and keep in mind you might maintain stock power but will probably loose a little.

I had a buddy last year that picked up an old ZR 580 cheap for his first sled. He wanted to make it have a little bark like ours so after a few beers in the shop he decided to weld an old blue bottle off a truck on there.... it definitely hurt the ears
