hollow point testing

Just wondering how you guys test your hollow point bullets? I tried taking to plastic jars and waded up 10 shirts and stuffed them in, and the bullets weren't penetrating threw so I thought it was dense enough to stop the bullets (.380,9mm,.357,.45) but for some reason not one bullet mushroomed.... What can I use that would be more like a human body? Thanks. I was using decent ammo to, Corbon and Hornady..

I was hoping to still catch the bullet to see how they mushroom so I can know if they'll perform if i need them to, otherwise I might as well carry fmj.. Im wondering if I shouldn't through something to mimic bone then repeat?

hollow points require someting soft or liquid filled to cause eruption. the nose is open and fills with flesh/liquid, it has more resistance then the slick outside surface.....so it expands. for a close comparison, fill some milk jugs with water and try that....they will expand. if you are wanting more serious testing, make some jello and add bones or sticks of wood.

or come to the northwest and shoot some wolves.

I can't rember the link but I used to have a FBI test of most all hollowpoint bullets in various calibers, in was a very good read.

I carry original winchester black talons or speer gold dots.

ill try water next time.. would it work if I put the shirts in then dumped a bunch of water with them? Im just thinking of anything that will contain the bullets so i can see how they work...

Milk jugs filled with water, if you're strictly looking for how the bullet mushrooms.

Some one else mentioned it, but soaked phone books work good. You need a couple of them to get the necessary depth to catch the bullet. Make sure to soak them for a while and make sure they are wet all the way through, otherwise you just punch holes, and no mushroming. I have used them to catch .223, .45, 9mm, and .357. Gold Dots seem to be the best of what were were testing. We used some factory loaded winchester and remington rounds as well as some hand loaded hornaday, corbond, and as mentioned the speer gold dots.

Ill try to phone book idea.. I heard of that one but didn;'t really want to deal with the mess of it but I think im just going to have to. better start looking threw the drawers to find them all... Any one try some Federal HST's as they advertise them my dream is to get a .45 acp with some HST's in it...:D
