Hmm and I work on these things...

I will let the pic do the talking for now.

looks like the cable derailed out of the sheaves then the cab comes and BLAMO! big problems... good thing the cable clamp held! Looks like they have a cable/sheave tension issue :)

I used to be a lift operator back in 91-93 at Loveland and those things always scared me

the topper is for the last 15+ years I have designed elevators for the worlds tallest buildings (I am an elevator consultant) all I know is elevators are REALLY SAFE compared to ski lifts... elevators have a 10:1 safety factor, every cab has at least 5-8 hoist ropes (steel cables), they are in a controlled environment (no wind/snow), etc...... ski lifts have 1 cable for all the cars!! scary shiznit

I'm going to have to pop in and say this.

Skilifts are safer then being in a car.

What happened to this thing is still unknowned. But the cabin was empty. If it had people it WOULD NOT of flipped over.

yes they are :) We have an old saying in the Elevator industry, "Elevators are the safest mode of transportation". This is based on how many people ride them everyday compared to the number of accidents.

However when things do go wrong, they go really wrong, people get cut in half because they try to climb out of the elevator after being stuck in it, then the elevator moves = yikes
If you have ever seen the inside of an escalator, you would take the stairs... they are safe, but when one bearing fails it can cut you in half.

Most elevator and escalator accidents are due to poor maintenece / or neglect from the building owners. Landlords may not have enough $$$ in the budget to properly repair or maintain the equipment, so technicians will bypass safeties because of the pressure to keep the lifts moving = bad news

my wife owns a carpet/flooring company how funny is that?
I will inspect an escalator and install carpet but when I ride an escalator I hold BOTH handrails....if the step gives out it will save your life

I have seen the inside of some escalators that should be taken out of service immediatley, but the building owners keep them running anyway....not good.

why are escalors so dangerous? something i should know about?

did that ladder just happen to be there? haha.

Whoops! hope they get that worked out soon, and check the other trams!

LOL never heard that one before!!!

Escalators are not that dangerous, unless of course they are left outside inteh elements for many months before being installed, and then lets say the janitorial crew uses a power washer with de-greaser to clean the steps at the top landing.. Yikes! So yeah you see its usually a maintenece issue or neglect issue that can make them dangerous... thats just one example of some of the units I have had the pleasure to see the inside of :)

Also the brakes must be checked and torqued often, when an escalator is full of people the brakes are what hold it from overspeeding (think Rockies stadium incident)

Each step has an axle, it rides on 4 bearings and 4 small wheels, driven by a chain...so lubrication is kinda important!
