High gas prices: are they reducing traffic?

I commute 25 cross-town miles. I have NOT noticed a change in traffic. Too bad, that would be the only good thing that could come from high gas prices. Is traffic lighter in other states or Canada?

Diesel is $4.99
Gas is $4.15 to $4.60 here and there is no change in traffic yet that I can see.

.

have seen a dramatic change in the SPEED of traffic here. Commute 15 miles each way to work...speed limit on the 4-lane highway is 55 mph. For the last three years, 68-72 was the normal speed on the road. Now 99% of the traffic is doing 58-62, including me. I set the cruise at 59 mph now trying to eek every mpg out of the 6.7 Cummins.

Good question. I don't think you'll see a change in commuting traffic very soon, but I'll bet big cake the vacation traffic on the highways this summer will be down.

650 ran a story on this and talked to a bunch of resorts following the May long weekend. Everyone they talked to said their sales were normal to above normal. Hasn't happened yet.

When gas prices first became this high the past 2 summers, everyone was complaining everywhere you went...I honestly have not heard many people complaining like that now as we are kind of used to high prices....

Our local prices:

Diesel: $4.79
Reg: $3.97

Funny how it went up like $.25 last week before the weekend and then did not change once the weekend was here....

havent noticed a difference but i havent been in town a lot now that im at the lake. however i still put 800 on a week going to school and on the highway have noticed less cars are on it but more trucks are on it

Had a buddy go across the border and back over the weekend. Drove right to the booth both times. Doubt if commuting will be effected yet, but the traveling I think has gone down. I didn't seem to see as many RV's on the road Friday.

i live in a tourist town and memorial weekend definatlly had less traffic this year

In my opinion this is exactly why the price of fuel hasn't and wont go down. Until people stop using it except for absolute necessity it will never go down. Why would it.

Another reason you might not notice is that your are on the roads when everyone else is, going to and from work, when they have to too. The big changes might be later at night or during the middle of the day. People might not be going out later to the stores, but doing it after work, say. But you dont see that since you arent out. yet!

We'll see as summer progresses.
I'm pretty sure we're not going to be affected quite so bad as our bro's in the US. Gas here has been in the $1.15/L range before..... so we've 'only' seen an increase of ~15% over previous highs. In the US, gas has doubled in the past 6 mos. in many places. Diesel is $5.00+/gallon in CA. You can't give away toy haulers..... if that's all their used for, so I'm pretty sure there's going to be less of them on the road there.

Saw a Clip on the News at an RV park over the long weekend and it was full they said so I don't know. Shorter trips they were saying but still going.
