went out to the airport last night and filled my 55 gallon steel barrel, the guy filling it grounded the barrel out, and keep telling me how dangerous it is
( 100 L L ) he said it is has a really high plash point and my plastic pump i had would cause alot of static, that and hauling in the enclosed with the fumes is really dangerous, he even said dont be one your phone within like 10 feet of it, is this gas really that bad?? or was he over reacting?

im assuming all of you haul your gas in your enclosed? leave the vent on the trailer open while driving probly.

is this stuff any worse than say hauling pump gas?

o ok well maybe he said it has a really low flash point, anyways he just said like 7 times how i wouldnt haul it anywere, and move it or mess with it, well thats pretty much exactly what we will be doing with it hauling it 1000 miles round trip

2 times a m onth

It's like anything. If you are going to have a metal 55 gal drum and pump it to your sled or whatever. You could generate enough static electricity to create a spark. I don't think it is any more dangerous than pumping standard fuel.

If you want to be safe you need to have a grounding strap from your drum to the container you are pumping to.

I'm a airline transport pilot and am around avgas every day

avgas isn't any more dangerous than fueling pump gas, be sure you are well ventilated, when fueling and watch out for sparks from your pump ex. if u hook it up to a battery to operate, I would recommend a hand pump for your fuel barrel, u shouldn't talk on your cell phone while fueling your car either, y do it fueling your sled.

some people are saftey freaks.. ive watched people smoke and fuel up.. not the brightest idea.. but sometimes its harder to mess up than you think... doesnt hurt to be a hair safe thought. i really doubt your gonna light the gas with static.. unless you get a huge mondo spark just perfect.. hold the barel still in the trailer, and you should be fine...

and same goes for talking on the phone.. how many people do you see doing that... how many blow up?? not many. none at all i think.. just it "could" happen.. so you gotta be scared of it.

If your drum is metal you can't hook a ground from your drum to your plastic snowmobile gas tank. If you are super worried about it you need to run a small guage wire from the drum on the outside of your filling hose/pump set up and then put your hose all the way into the fuel tank on your sled so the wire touches the fuel. The only time you really get flashing from static is when you have say a little bit of diesel in the bottom of a tanker trailer and your filling it with gasoline. Since they have two different specific gravities when the gas runs through the diesel it casues static discharges. I have seen it before but it was at a top loading truck rack where product flows at 650 gpm. Aslo seen it one other time. We were draining down a mainline pipeline pump that had gasoline in it when they shut it in, usually try to lay anything down in diesel when you have planned maintenance. When we shut it in there was around 600psi in the header. Opened a 1/2 stainless valve with 1/2 stainless tubing into a metal bucket. Poof. Flashed and started a small fire. If you are filling at 650 gpm or at over 600 psi you might want to watch it.

im not real worried, but by the way this dude was going off i thought a better check its a steel 55 gallon drum, with a palistic kinda cheap hand pump.

im going to leave the vent screw open on the top of the pump and leave the vents open in the trailer, and im sure i will be fine.

Now that I know u have a plastic hand pump-,no woories at all

hand pump is key, no safety issues what so ever, Avgas is a bitch to tune with when using twin pipes, beware- headache waiting

Your saying this because it is a PITA to read the plugs and piston wash with the Av fuel?

I have ran a lot of it through my 900 with the twins. Never had a problem. But it is a lot tougher to read wash and plugs.

suggest EGT's.
