high end camera or camcorder?

I enjoyed making the helmet cam videos this past winter and I am looking to step it up for next winter. I am going to buy an HD helmet camera and I am trying to figure out what to buy to compliment it.

Should I buy a good digital camera like a Rebel or should I buy an HD camcorder? I want to take both still shots and video with it.

What do you mostly do? Still or video? That should determine what camera you get.

Videocameras take decent still shots (Lower resolution than a DSC), and still cameras take decent video (Missing features/framerate/resolution that a videocam would have).

My sony takes decent video, VGA@30fps on the highest quality setting. Looks good on youtube and standard-def TVs. If you want to stuff all the videos on DVD, I'd go with the videocamera.

I have both, the Rebel and a Sony HDR handycam. We used to take the Rebel, but now use the camcorder. We have gotten more into videos than stills (the Rebel takes GREAT stills!) My rebel doesn't take video, couple years old. The handycam takes pretty nice stills- it has an easy to use still button. I love the HD quality of the camcorder and we are also getting the HD helmet cam to go with it. The camcorder will give you better zoom ability and other video features I would think.? Does the new rebel have HD video??
You'll probably get a more stable pic from the video camera...small easy to hold. Tough to view screen on handycam when shooting though. No eyepiece on ours, just the screen.
The rebel has more parts/lenses etc to deal with when out in the wet/cold...I like the simpleness of the camcorder when out shooting and ease of holding etc.

We use our footage for DVD's, posting on vimeo etc...and want to get into HD. I would suggest the camcorder if that's what you want to do. Our buddy takes all his footage with his reg. camera and it turns out pretty good. But harder to hold, less features, no HD ability. With things going HD, I'd think you'd want that ability if purchasing new.

I've also been looking at some of the new still camera's that shoot HD video.. The new Rebel T1i, Canon SX1IS, Nikon D90, and many more seem to be good video from 20-30fps....

I have to wonder if the 1080P at 30 fps isn't close to what the video camera's are shooting? I thought I read something about video at 120fps once...??

I keep thinking it comes down to the lens.... The resolution is quite outstanding with both video and still's these day's....

Sorry wish I could of been of some help... LOL

I just bought a Sony HDR-CX100 HD camcorder. I have not had the chance to use it yet, but I am excited to see how it does.
