Help... wife rode 2 miles with brake on

Well after our lunch stop my wife rode her 500 MC EFI for about 2 miles with the brake on. She finally stopped when the "smell" got too bad. The heat was so intense that it burned the recoil rope in two.

So... I know I need a new rope and belt (belt was sitting 1/16" above secondary this morning, now about 1/16 below). Is there anything else I should worry about? The brakes seem to work just fine, i am not sure if I need to worry about anything in the clutches.

Any tips on re-winding the recoil?

I'd take a really good look at the caliper for heat damage to the seals and replace the pads and maybe the rotor as well.

She's lucky the heat didn't melt a hole in the oil tank and send the whole sled up in flames. I would replace the oil and the top bearing in the chain case as well as the things the others have suggested. (Except trading the wife, everyone makes mistakes). Unless the spring in the recoil has come loose from the rope spool you shouldn't have to take it completely apart. You can thread the new rope into the spool through the hole where the know goes to keep it from pulling out, and then take a few wraps to tighten the spring. There is a notch in the spool to let you do this easily. Take the few wraps and then let some of the rope rewind on to the spool and do again until you get all the rope on it and have spring tension to make it rewind. Hope that makes sense.

A buddy of mine has a 04 KK 900 and did the same thing, thank god he only went about 50 feet....

I wish they had a brake indicator light on the guages so u knew they were on, or locked on...

oh well, mistakes will happen.

good luck

LOL, Twice Ive done that sh!t. Once was taking it off the trailer it was already running just I had unloaded the truck jumped on hit the flipper smoked the belt , second time left a shelter ( I dont know how the E brake got on ?) made it about 100 feet, its funny how a 1000cc still takes off hard with the brake on. LOL . A E brke light on the dash would have saved me a couple of $$ .
I think as others have said you best just get at it and once the chain case is apart just replace the $35 bearing , run the sled on a stand and lightly aply and brake to check if the rotor is warped, rewind is a cheep easy fix, replace brake fluid. :beer;

This just got me thinking, it shouldn't be too hard to wire up one of the blank warning lights to activate when you pull the brake lever. Just tie into the brake light wires that are already there.

May have to look at doing this, if I remember.
