HELP!! Overheating/ water pump

Alright here is the deal. Helping a buddy on his edge, not sure what year but its the gray and yellow one. It over heated on him and coolant leaked out. Towed it home.

I poured coolant in to see if it would run out on its own. NO

I then ran it a bit on the stand.....temp light came on. Nothing leaking. Coolant wasn't cycling so figured thermostat. Pulled thermo and ran again. Temp light again, NO Flow.

While still warm I pulled the his on thermo housing. Steam coming out, lots of pressure no coolant squirting though.

Here are my thoughts and need some input.
# 1- water pump not cycling. Can water pumps go bad without affecting engine performance?
# 2-still air in the system not allowing it to circulate?
# 3- I did pull the head and no signs of cylinders burning coolant, that doesn't mean the system isn't getting back pressured.

Thoughts??

My guess would be water pump belt. These need to be replaced after so many miles. Which essentially would be water pump issue. How many miles on sled, and has the belt ever been replaced?

See thats why I asked, I can guarantee you it has never been touched. 3kish
miles on it. I didn't even know they had belts. I am a Doo guy. Our water pumps are ran directly in the crank case.

Can you change a belt without removing the engine?

Yes, just remove the pipe, and then the two bolts from the oil pump. Move the oil pump out of the way, and take the half dozen bolts out of the pull start. Remove the pull start and there it is. You can check or remove/replace the belt at this time.

yup belt for sure, I change mine every year as general maint. Easy to do, btw bolts are 8mm and get the kevlar belt from gates can't remember the # off hand but we ordered a bunch from napa

I see you have ordered the kevlar Gates water pump belts from Napa... could you provide the Gates belt number for me? I need to order one and it would make it a lot easier if I went in with the number instead of having them take a guess and ordering the wrong one. THANKS!

pull the oil pump off and see if the shaft is turning in there to check your belt. then pull the cover off the back of the housing and check the impeller if it is turning

Yeah i'll dig one out tomorrow, send me a pm if i forget...lol....old age..:face-icon-small-coo

Got the sled up and running today. It was a broken belt. Water pump and everything was spinning freely. Appears the belt just broke. Anyway new belt, new head gaskets, and bled the system and she seems to be running fine.
