I posted this under Colorado but think we need much more attention to this matter.

Wow. We attended a meeting put on by these folks up at Thomasville last night where they were there to review maps with the locals in the area. If you ride the White River National Forest or know anyone that enjoys "mechanized" travel....or for that matter the ability to run a chainsaw here I encourage you to take a look at the website and take action! http://www.whiteriverwild.org/white-river-national-forest.php

In my mind, for the snowmobile community especially, this is a HUGE WILDERNESS LAND GRAB and they are looking at some of the best riding in the area. This is not going through the normal forest service review etc...They are putting together their ideas and going straight to congress with it....and wait....theres more....they are preparing to do this by this OCTOBER with maps and ideas that they are scrambling to put together without consideration for the impacts it will create on all the various users of the forest.

The time to get involved is now while you can make a difference and not later when you are sitting in the parking lot at your newly formed wilderness area wondering where the heck you are going to ride because your favorite area has been taken away.

Have you considered writing this up, as a SAWS comment, and giving it to Dave at SAWS, so he can email it to his list? He might help generate some comments.

We also were at the meeting last night, I tell you, this is one BIG bill that is scary!! They have the people in office to pass this right past our noses. WE NEED VOICES!!! This takes alot of riding area away from us. I see MT has a new bill also being introduced, what is the next state? It could be yours!!! We are looking for any help that anyone can offer. Does anyone really know what a petition really does once it has hit the office's of the state rep? We are still compiling more information to get FACTS, then taking it around to all the dealerships for exposure. We see it will basically shut our local businesses down as they count on all the ATV, dirt bike and snowmobiles to make a living. Plus the other small companies that just do repairs. This will have a effect on the 4 major manufactures if CO, MT and the next state pass this bill. Apparently we don't have enough people out of jobs, they want to create more unemployeed. Please offer any info you may have and we will post more as we get it together!!! THANK YOU!!

this is out of my league...and country...but can you get a court injunction to slow this down while you rally the forces...???...

OK, you guys need to slow down.

Who is pushing this, a bunch of greenies, or the state, county, Forest Service, Obama Administration, your Senator? Who?

Their webpage looks like one of those standard, it's going to happen, and it's going to be great, Bull Krap pages. Everything on that page is misleading. Wilderness is not good for any economy. Yha, 12 million people visit wilderness, good thing most of our national parks are wilderness, or they would have to say something more like 100,000 people visit wilderness, and a bunch of hunters use it.

Once you know who is pushing it, then you need to figure out who to put pressure on. You can't create wilderness by October, unless this thing has been in the works for 5 years. You have to create a bill, or find an omnibus bill to ride on. Does any of your Senators oppose more wilderness. If a state's Senator opposes it, it will never happen.

There are wildernes bills in every state. Some are disguised as Roadless, or wildlife corridors. This just looks like a proposed wilderness. Anyone can create a proposed wilderness. You need to work on your county commissioners. They can request cooperating agency status, and really put the breaks on. Then explore your 2477 rule rights. Study each area, and see if it meets the definition of Wilderness. Is it currently designated as Primitive Roadless?

Just got an email forward about this. Seems unbelievable they'd be able to get anything done by October, but I'm no expert on legislative process either.

No matter what though, people for motorized use need to know about this.

Hey Sean,

I replied to your email today. I also forwarded it on to our club members. This proposal was good timing on their end (and bad on ours) because most of the snowmobile members are dormit until the snow flies. Let me know the next big meeting and I'll try to be there. Our club meets for the first time of the year the first week in September.

You guys need to go around, and put up signs along the Groomed Snomobile Trails.

That should get their attention.
