HELP....09 DRAGON WON'T IDLE ON MOUNTAIN

Hey guys I need some help. My 09 Dragon will idle normal at sea level, but when I'm up the mountain it won't. It still pulls hard, it just won't idle. If I try to idle it the rpms sits at about 1100 and drops to the point that the gauges flash and it won't register any rpm and then it dies. The fuel reg has been replaced, and the dealer doesn't know what it could be.

Could be a couple of things. Here are a few I suggest. Fuel filter. Reeds. Intake boot. Bad cylinder, have you checked compression? What kind of fuel? If you are running to much octane this happens. And the one most likely TPS needs to be calibrated. Give some more history. Did you just buy it? Did it use to idle and now it won't? How many miles? What rpm does it idle at sea level. Is it stock?

I bought it used from the dealer this season. It has about 400 miles on it. It has never idled up on the mountain, at seal level it idles perfect at about 1500 to 1700 rpm. It has an SLP pipe on it, other than that it is stock

I hope someone has a good answer to this cuz I've got an 08app 700 that just started doing the same thing. Once the sled gets good n warm it quits but right off the trailer it clicks n the gauge flashes then wont idle n dies. Didn't do this last season.

Mine did the same thing. I took it into the dealer figuring the TPS was out of wack. They looked at it and said the baseline was set right on the TPS but the idle was a bit low. They adjusted it and now it idles at about 1850. At 1500-1700 you are on the low end of the suggested idle (1700 +/- 200). At high elevation your sled will idle a bit lower anyways because of the thin air. My suggestion is to take it in and have the dealer set the TPS.

I fought that very same problem right afer the 2010 updates were done. It was to rich at idle (these ecu's don't compensate altitude as well as they should). After every possible cause was checked and verified to be ok I just used my fuel box and cut 10% fuel at idle. Idled perfect after that.

My '09 800 does this same thing. If I leave it idling to long and don't clean it out before I shut down, it loads up bad on fuel then I have to hold it wide open for like 8-10 pulls to start and then you can tell it's drowning in fuel. My thought was also to get a PC-V and take fuel out of the idle (and then some) to fix. Seems like an expensive fix for such a small problem but I don't know what else to do.
It's definately worse at higher elevation as well as my idle is as much as 200 less at elevation.

Believe it or not but sometimes this problem is as simple as a throttle cable out of adjustment. Try adjusting the cable and take as much slack out of the cable as possible but leaving just a tiny bit.

Sounds like a TPS problem, loose throttle body clamps, or a vacuum leak from a partially torn throttle body boot. At 1,500 - 1,700 RPM's idle, that's a little low.

I would also find out what mapping you are running in the ECM and make sure it matches injector color. If you are running the 2010 update, no fix kit and no Power Commander, than the April 2010 map will probably be your best bet.

You stated that the volatge regulator had been replaced....did it fail and was the ECM inspected for a melting issue or was it replaced in an attempt to solve this symptom??

The dealer told me they replaced the fuel regulator. Nothing else seemed to come to their attention, or needed to be replaced. The dealer wants me to try a new fuel reg before I go out next ride.

The fuel regulator, are you talking about the fuel pressure regulator or voltage regultor? If so (fuel regulator), that is part of the fuel pump assembly which is located in the fuel tank and is not serviced seperately from Polaris and is in the neighborhood of $400.

Is the sled low on fuel pressure? Is this the reason for the recommendation of trying a new fuel reg?

I have this same problem on my 09 d8. At sea level it idles good at like 1700-1800 rpms and will start first or second pull everytime. Ive had it out west 8-10k and it will only idle like 1300-1400rpms. And it takes like 5-6 pulls. It seemed like if i would hold it about half throttle it would start alot easier. It sounds like what they are talking that it is running rich at idle and just isnt noticeable at low elevation?

I think the dealer has no clue, and thinks it may have been a faulty fuel reg.

Sometimes, on the best days, I get snow and ice build up not allowing the throttle to return to the idle position and it won’t idle. Have to chip it out. Also remember to lube the exposed cable; it does make a difference.

Fine at low elevation and not ice build-up then too rich? Check plugs at idle conditions, see if fouled? I am running the NGKs this year and they seem to last longer and idle better and my oiler is way too rich.

Good luck, if u cant figure it out just ride with it WOT!!! Or leave the mountains for everyone else ;)
