Helmets: Modular vs Snocross

I currently use a BRP modular helmet but I have been thinking about buying a snocross style helmet for backcountry powder riding. What are the benefits of the Snocross style helmets over the modular? I like the look of the snocross helmets but I would think that a person's face would freeze on a deep powder day.

where a balaclava and buy some goggles with a nose piece and you will have not exposed skin and it is warm. i hardly ever have fogging problem unless you dig yourself out with your helmet on bring extra goggles in case. never used a modular so i dont know what its like

It all depends on what your looking to spend. You can go with your standard HJC helmets that will range between 100-200 bucks or you can look into other brands like Fly, Fox, Aria, Troy Lee Designs or klim just to name a few. I have a Fox helmet and spend around 450-500 bucks on it. It was pricey but the comfort and venting is second to none and you know your head is safe. After all its hard to put a price on your head and protecting your dome piece. I've never worn a modular helmet but seems like it would be closterfobic (spelling?).

Last season i wore a Troy Lee helmet and it was ok...vented very well...almost too good on cold days. Went to a HJC this year. Interestingly enough, the HJC i chose was the exact same weight as the $530.00 Shoei helmet i was looking at (3.0 lbs) The HJC was about $150.00 and fit almost as good as the Shoei. Plus the HJC had a little more space between my nose and the nosepiece, while the Shoei was way too close for me.

Just food for thought :)

i've been using FLY lite's for a few years; they are super comfortable and the fit/finish is great and the new graphics Jerry is doing are killer!

HA! NMFH...That is some FUNNY stuff!!! I've been laughing all day. Thanks for the info. I'm heading to the shop to buy a new snowcross style helmet! Anyone want to buy a slightly used modular???

That's like trying to sell a PSI engine. :)
Been there, done that.

you get what you pay for. helmets and their internals do have a clicking tock. they are not good forever as elements do break down, decreasing their safety. i ride a street bike and it is worth it to me to buy a $500 shoei. have you guys read the studies on head injuries? something is definitely better than nothing i suppose.

it takes a split second to change your life forever. do you want to end up like christopher reeves? or keep on ballin?
