Helmet Lights

I have been looking all winter for an inexpensive small helmet light. The ones I see available all seem super bulky or have an insane price tag. Has anyone created one that is well suited for sledding? Do people make their own mounts that will adapt to a basic light? I'm looking for opinions and user reviews. Almost half of my riding is at sunset into the night and a second light would be helpful for next season.

I don't like the leadog light because it is huge and you have to wire it into the sled. I want something with a small battery back I can store in my avy bag or jacket and that mounts on the side rather than the top of the helmet.

helmet light

I bought a lead dog helmet light 5 years ago and love it. I've never replaced a bulb and have had no issues with it. Many times I leave it in the sled until the next ride, still no problems. The beam on it is great, I've been able to spot elk while heading back to the truck. Its awesome and works great, well worth the $79.00

Cyclops offers a large number of helmet mounted lighting systems. They can purchased either battery powered or machine powered. Here is a couple of examples.

I have the Cyclops Solstice and would never ride without one again. When I had my headlights hooked up while on highbeam, the Cyclops would drown the headlights out.
It is a real sturdy fixture that has bounced off of more than one tree.
Its also real nice too be able too turn my head and see where I want too go.

cyclops solstice here as well. It is very very good.. I have the regular one as well. That one works good too.

I think the biggest thing is to get a helmet light, period. They are amazing with how much better you can see your surroundings.

They don't work to well when it is snowing though... It starts looking like you are traveling in space... lol

I believe it is the narrow... I would like to see a difference between the narrow and the wide out in the snow.

Same here.
I know some of the brands offer the head with both focus patterns, but having never used a helmet mounted light, I haven't a clue which would really be better in the real world.

That Cyclops Solstice looks like a really nice light. Since I'm going to be running my sled with out head lights this year I'm interested in something like this for those rides in the dark. Is it permanently mounted to your helmet once you put it on or can you take it off when you don't need it?

So no-one is offering them in LED yet?

That should really cut the power draw eh?

I have a cpl Lead Dogs. I don't know if they have a newer design out by now or not. Mine are a few yrs old by now.

I never thought that they were bulky. ??? I can't feel it up there... Sure would be nice to ditch the cord, but I kant imagine how powerfull of light you could have for any amount of duration with just a batt pack?

You would at least be able to plug in if/when thr batt pack went down wouldn't you?

MAN what I would'a gave for one of them 15 yrs ago with the old plow! Try breaking trail after dark with snow comming over the hood. On hand on the steer/throttle, the other constantly trying to keep the snow off the light. :face-icon-small-dis

.

ok so were do i get a light like those and how does it run off my sled. my sled has the lights removed and a vent add and i have a walmart brand light w/ a strap on it on there but its not bright enough

COOL Thread!!!

Thanks for the support guys! All you guys are very much appreciated!
Ruffy you are set up with the spot as most Motorsports orientated helmet lights should be.. This is due to the fact that you can scan with your head. the spot shoots out twice as far as the flood. Making it really your primary light source (HID). Some mountain bike riders prefer the flood, but that is dictated by the slower speeds.

We do have a few LED versions with a new one coming with a much lower price and battery power. 900 lumens 3.5hr on full and nice 169.95 price tag
but like all things you do get what you pay for..This will be a great entry level light

LEDs have a long way to go to catch up with the current HID offering. but if battery powered run time is what you need they are the ticket.

The sled powered Halogen also works well, but should be ran from the sled.

We also have the same HID that is in the Solstice with a chin mount, however, the top mount simply works far better.
Currently we are working on a completely new site and will be adding at least 3 new helmet mounted light setups on launch..aug 1st.

something that many don't think about is that they can use the lights for crossover sports and get more value out of an investment.
The same light you use for sledding can be used for Dirtbikes,Quads or your mountain bike etc..

a rider can also build their own helmet mounted light setup. Just get out and do some night riding.. its the most fun you can have at night.. well almost..
