THANK YOU!!

I ordered a Samsung today. Smaller than a pack of cigarettes. If it works good it will be great to have a camcorder/helmet camera all in one. I bought the X210L model in the pic below(under $300). There is a better one, but it must not be on the market yet. It's called Samsung VP-X100L See link:

Just a little info for you.

Well I'm sure Best Buy would be the first one to give you any negative reviews because that would really improve their sales numbers.

The link you posted one guy talks about the thousand of people with failures and no customer support.

And the reason you don't need to resize for the internet is because the file size is so small because of the small resolution. As I said in my first post " If you are just looking to post to Youtube then a memory style recorder is OK, but if you want to watch your vids on a full size computer screen or a tv then these units are lacking the resolution needed. "

To each his own. I'm happy that your happy. I was just trying to help another sledder understand what to look for and think about before spending hard earned money. I learned the hard way.

so what's a good quality with helmet cam then.would be nice to have handheld to that's for sure.but seems you want LANC which i understand to be on off switch ?

Definition of LANC is :
LANC or Local Application Control Bus System, also known as Control-L is a protocol by Sony used to synchronize camcorders and cameras.[1]

LANC is a terminal on Sony as well as other manufacturers' camcorders which enables other accessories like Tripods with a control handle to control the camera with a wire connected to a LANC port without dealing with buttons on the camera itself. It is also available on many still cameras, where it is called ACC (the DSC-xxxx series of cameras).

The bi-directional protocol is made up of 8 (8-bit) bytes, usually clocked by the camera at 9600 bit/s. Each frame of bytes occurs in sync with the beginning of each video frame (NTSC or PAL). The physical connector is either a 5-pin mini-DIN connector and jack[2] or a 2.5mm 3-conductor phone jack and plug.[3]

In newer Sony digital Handycam(R) camcorders with 10-pin multi-A/V remote terminal jacks, LANC is available, but not directly accessible without making a custom/home-made adapter cable. Sony RM-AV2 Remote Commander is an example of a LANC controller which plugs into the Sony 10-pin multi-A/V remote terminal jack.[4]

Sony "Control-S" is a similar interface, but it is uni-directional providing control-only, and not feedback from the device being controlled.

Panasonic Control-M is a similar 5-pin mini-DIN bi-directional interface and protocol which has a different implementation.

So if you confused the answer is ... YES , a LANC is at least a REMOTE on and off switch for recording and maybe not power.

What is good quality with a helmet cam?

This is too broad of a question.

Specifically what do you mean?

Resolution?
Battery life?
File format?
Editing software?
Durability?
Simplicity?
Recording Medium?
Bells and Whistles?

No matter what setup you have you will have a helmet or remote mounted camera and a recording device. They are 2 seperate components but both are mated together when talking picture quality. You can have a top quality helmet camera and a low quality recorder and you will only get a low quality video and visa/versa.

Helmet camera: There are a few companies that sell top quality remote/helmet cameras although most are ultimately manufacture by Sony. Then you need to consider the mounting system. I personaly like http://https://helmetcamera.com/. They carry Sony high resolution cameras with a great mountaing system. I prefere the 560 line resolution camera. The mount protects the camera and lens from damage and once attached to your helmet it won't come off until you pull it off. It's also waterproof and has different lens if you want.

Recorder: You have your choice here between different formats. Most memory formats (compact flash or memory stick) recorders will onlly record up to 640 x 480 pixles or less than . 1/3 megapixle @ 30 fps (frames per second. Helmetcam.com also like most companies has a memory format mini DVR. It has slightly better resolution at 720 x 480 at 30 fps. These recorders end product looks grainy and flat when played on a computer monitor or tv. Try blowing up a 1/3 megapixle still picture to 15". The other style recording device is usualy a camcoder with an external video input. These units operate as a seperate DVR. They come in mini-DV (digital video) or dvd formats. Depending on the unit they record at upwards of 1 megepixle resolution. I use an older model Sony mini-DV Dcr Trv 30 LANC capability. Recorders need to be started and stopped during the course or the day and with a waterproof LANC you can do that without needing to open a pack or pocket to get to the recorder.

In photography you get what you pay for. Low resolution complete setups can start as cheap as $300 and go to $5-600. They work OK for internet postings. High resolution external (helmet cam) camera kits will be in the $2-350 range plus the price of the camcorder. I bought my Sony Dcr Trv 30 used on Ebay. It is a 1.5 megapixle camcorder and has external digital video input and LANC capable. I have around $800 into my setup including extra battery waterproof LANC and backpack. It can be used as a helmet cam or seperate camcorder and I house the camcorder for underwater video photography as well. A friend of mine is using a newer Sony camcorder but I can't remember the model number right now. Many of the newer models don't have external video in or LANC options though.
