Helmet Advice

Anyone with advice on a helmet? I am new to snowmobiling and about to buy my first helmet. Can't decide between an MX style helmet and a fully enclosed type helmet like the Polaris AF-1.
Advantages/disadvantages of each? Your experience? What kind of helmet you use?
Advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jake

Ski-Doo Modular..............

:D

I ride an openface down to -20F, if you bundle up and keep everything covered right you'll be fine...

If you can try both before you buy I prefer the mx style as its easy to change goggles to light conditions and less fogging Also cheaper . The Ski-Doo Modular I hear works pretty good and if full face was what i decided on that's where i would look

I have used both over the years and only wear an MX style now(i just bought a new one and ordered my goggles yesterday). The Mx style has never fogged on me and the smith snow warp goggles with the light sensor lenses are amazing. The mx style is colder than full face but when my reluctant to switch buddies r cleaning their visors and i am riding i just laugh and keep going.:D If u ride in the mountains an mx style is almost a must for agressive riding ecspecialy in the pow!

I suggest the MX because it is less money, less maintenance, easier for others to hear you speaking, and it can be used year round if you ever ride dirt bikes or atv's.

I also suspect it may be easier to breath (while digging out, etc) in MX vs modular but can't say for sure since I've never worn the other.

Another advantage is when it is warmer you can get more airflow and still keep your eye protection - just change balaclavas or go without. I just feel too couped up with the shield down on full face helmets.

You can buy various types of balaclavas to keep your face warmer in really cold weather. I use a windstopper type in colder weather and a normal one above 35 or so. In really windy/cold you can get the type that have a "flap" that covers your nose but is loose at the bottom so more of your breath is directed downward.

I haven't seen any goggle that doesn't ever fog but it is definitely easier to unfog goggles vs full face. Just place the goggles in engine area and close hood for a few minutes.

I've had great luck with my Klim F4 and Scott Turbo 89xi goggles ...

I had to swap back to my old run-of-the-mill HJC helmet last weekend because I forgot to bring my F4 ...

Man was I missin the F4 ... Great helmet.

Definitely mx style. I've had both. Your face won't get cold and you'll have less fogging.

Mx

I looked hard at a Klim this year, but found a G-max snowmobile only helmet on the shelf for $120. The breath box is built in and fits perfectly and keeps the goggles unfogged until the weather gets sub 0. For the money, it's been an awesome helmet. Aslo, the vents, open and close, unlike the Klim.

MX for sure, W/ breath box, HJC makes the best breath box and it works in most helmets. It covers the lower part of your face and the goggles cover your upper face. I ride with a Fox V3 helmet, HJC breath box, and 509 goggles. I have no exposed skin on my face. I rode in -24 three weeks ago and was just fine. Have two friends that had Ski Doo modulars that I coverted to open face, and they say they will never go back.
