I know this gets beat to death but go easy on a newb please. With my wife being a nurse she has to put her vaca requests in well before winter so we cant just wait for the snow then go. What do you guys think my best bet would be for planning a trip to the horns with decent snow this coming season. She has to have her request in by september for next year. I know its a crap shoot but when have you guys seemed to have the best luck. Thanks for any info.

Yes most likely the only big trip. This will be the first time out west. I figure by the time i spend the money on converting our sleds, buying avy gear, lodging and fuel my season budget will be blown out of the water.

bubba pointed out the best time to go as far as snow out there but you might want to consider something else. I go out west in March because I want to ride the midwest when there is snow. Then I set up my set for out west and go then I am done for the year. Yes it can get pretty warm out there mid/late March but it is always rideable. So maybe you want to consider mid or even late feb so you can get other riding in before hand.
Also, what sleds do you have, will it be a lot to switch them over? If you need to get helixes, springs, cam arms, jets, etc you might want to make a list of what your altitude chart requires so you find them cheap. For instance, if you have Polaris 600's or 500's, I can set you up as I have those parts sitting around.

I have a 11 switch assault and a 11 renegade 800 etec so luckly no jetting required. Looking into the oem 2 incher for the assault and the 2.25 track off the freeride for the gade. When it comes to clutching I'm clueless, never touched one so definately gonna need help with that. I'm an auto tech so I do have mechanical ability.

trip

We always go to the bighorns in mid march, best time to go with lots of base, { last winter was a different story} We have been going to horns for 15-18 years mid march has been good to us, longer days, can be record snows and nice temps, the snow is set up good,if u have a short track and u can also get some real heavy snow mid march We used to go out in january but wasnt as much fun because snow was so powdery and deep we coulnt get back into all the fun play areas, Have fun:rockon:

Hard to tell when will be good depends what kinda riding you like, could be like the year before and just deep all the time or like last year and get no snow really from march on. I think from riding the horns for 2 years about every weekend january or february would be your best bet. The later in the year you go the base is just gonna be that much better. Depending on what your preferences are, the weekends are usually always busy and the lodges are full dont forget to make reservations. And now there is a new guide service in the horns so might be worth giving them a call so you can get to some good area.

Thanks for all the replys guys, has helped shed some light on the matter. How far in advance do you usaully try to reserve a place?

Time

I your open to sleding other place's laramie has soom great riding to, go ahead and book something in the horns and if the snow is better in laramie cancel, you can always get a room in laramie but you have to trailer to the snow.

I'm open to riding anywhere just thought maybe the horns would be alittle calmer place for some beginners. Was also looking at the thunder moutain lodge in colorado. Would like to stay somewhere we can ride right from the door. Lookin at bear lodge for the horns. If we went to the snowies prolly try to stay at ten mile or mountain meadows. Any personal experiences with those locations?

If you go to Laramie check out snowymountainlodge.org. The cabins a great and you can ride from your door step.

I agree with Bubba, book both places, take the one with the best conditions. Wyoever suggested SML, since you'd be coming in new I'd suggest Albany Lodge. They have excellent facilities, lodging, bar, food, gas, and you ride from your door. The trails IMO are more protected, therefore probably more suited to first timers, you can jump off into powder at many places. You'll have a good time!

Thanks thats a pretty good idea prolly do that then. Just have to make sure to give enough notice, don't wanna stiff anyone with an empty cabin and lose the money.
