So I was ridin my 2006 900 switchback this weekend, about 80mi into the ride my left hand grip heater quit workin, then about 50mi later my headlights and mfd both went dark. The display went out totally, but the headlight filaments were just barely glowing. I pulled over and lifted the hood, could not find any chaffed wires or any thing else that looked out of place. I did unplug the grip heater that stopped working and when I re started the sled the lights and mfd both worked fine. The mfd had retained all memory and settings. Do you guys thing the screwy grip heater could of caused my problem??? Sled was only turned off for 4min when I inspected it on the trail, I then rode 30 more miles with no problems at all. Im gunna dive into it a lil deeper tonite, just tryin to get the info mill runnin with the thread. Boy I hope its not my stator! P.s.. sled stayed running fine when the lights and mfd went out! Thanks. Dan

Yes the grip could have caused the problem. If the sled was still running good I don't think it is your stator. Ussually with a stator it quits then starts back up fine when it cools off.

Depending on the severity of the short, a bad hand-warmer can cause your symptoms. I had similar symptoms from a shorted wire last season (not the handwarmer tho) and eliminating the short fixed the problem.

ditto with above....

you most likely have a bad heater and it shorted out on the bars...

if you have a lefty throttle, it might have been tight and pinch the wires, or it just went out on you .

Same thing happened to me - my handwarmer quit working and when the dealer replaced it they must have nipped the wire and caused periodic shorts and my gauges and lites keep coming and going - dealer re-did the hand warmer this yr and no issues since!!!

Well guys I threw the sled up on the lift lastnite, started it, plugged in the bad grip heater and the lights went out again. Plugged in a new heater and everything worked fine! Installed new grip heaters, and I soldered in some wire extensions so they clear the hand guard mounts alot better. But the problem was where the wiring solders onto the heater elements, the + & - wires had broke their solders and were touchin each other, so yeah that made for a pretty bad short! Thanks guys!
