Head light/taillight intermittent PLEASE HELP!

I am recently a new member and having problems with my sxr 600 (2001).
My headlight and tail light will go out on a random basis. I also lose my dashlights and RPM gauge bounces out of control. Motor will run fine, i just keep losing all of my electrical things. What should i check or test first?

Check the wire harness that goes under the engine to the left hand front bulkhead from the engine. It can rub through and cause these problems. Shad

Found that the cord for a heated shield (which i do not use) had been rubbing on something (looks like the clutch) and was bare for bout an inch. If this was hitting a metal place for a ground would that cause the sled to lose headliught/tail light/ guage lights? Are there any fuses on the SXR? If so, Im surprised they didnt blow.
