HCR vs. Assualt

This is just my opinion but I rode with the assualt and HCR this year, both were stock. In the woops the Assualt handles better but in the deep snow the HCR outclimbed it easily. I do a lot of hillclimbing so the HCR would be the easy choice for me. I was not impressed with the assualt track at all in the deep snow.

All of my buddies that bought new sled this year bought assaults. They trench in the deep compaired to a HCR but I like the skid setup more. Both are fun sleds and you can't go wrong either way.

If 2010 then the HCR will have way more go than the Assault. I rode both 2010 models at the snow shoot and the new Cat 800 makes noticeably more power.

The Assault track is made for hard snow. In those conditions it hooks up like you can't imagine... it about pitched me off a couple of times.

But point them up a hill with fresh snow on it and the HCR out climbs the Assault be several sled lengths.

On something rough though, the Assault rules with those premium (not the stupid ones like on the Dragon) Walker Evans shocks.

Rocky Yancy has a pump gas turbo Assault, with OEM track, and says he had no problem with the pump gas turbo dragons this winter. He says he went as high as they went on the powder hills.

This isnt even up for debate... HCR owns in every aspect, except trail riding and the bumps...

I've yet to see either one work in the pow very well. Especially vs. a M or a dragon. Have to give the Assult the top spot on the hardpack, simply because of the better ride.

I rode 2 assaults with the plan of buying one this year for my wife, after riding them, we changed our minds. both were lacking in power, one had an slp setup & clutching that put it in proper rpm range for our altitude (compared to a semi set up cat 800), and the track was lacking. The usual dragon handling which is top of its class IMO, the best chassis on the snow (as handling/sidehilling goes), and I loved the length, great mix of mtn & air. But when the $$ got shelled out we got a narrowed hcr (with one of them spinny intake things on it, but that was just an added bonus)

btw, not impressed with the hcr track either... I'd like an 80 duro powerclaw in a 146 for that sled ideally.

I think it's really a choice based on what & how you ride more than anything else. The cat engine & durability won out for us though.

I would go with the one thats gonna run all year. HCR would be the way to go. Seen and heard of lots of poos going down and the cats are bulletproof. Who knows with the 2010's though.my next sled will probably be green.

It depends on your riding style. The Assault is a freeride sled, mainly for jumping and aggressive riding. If you want to do more climbing and deep powder riding then the HCR would be the way to go. They both are fun sleds though.

Agreed. This sleds are not really comparable. The HCR is for hillclimbing and the Assult is for "backcountry freestyle"

Polaris has that proble fix of them burning down last i heard. And also if you would put a longer track on the assault why not just by a D8 with a 155 or a 163. Also if you like doing jumps the assaults the way to go but if you like playing in the deep pow I would go with something that has a longer track and a sled that is a little bit better than everybody that you ride with.

I agree with doo man, I have compared my Dragon 700 to the Assault on a hill, and the assault would barely make it out the top. While my 700 would jump out of the top. The Assualt is definitely a momentum sled when riding in deep snow. Even saying that, i think the Assault are a really fun sled to ride. It just depends on the way you plan on riding the sled.

I'll chime one in for the 09 Doo 800x 146. Probably still the best free ride sled out there, and yes i rode all three (key is getting used to the chassis, 200+ miles and you will love the xp, anything less than that and you will absolutly hate it). XP floats through the pow, takes the hits, and holds up much better than the IQ, cat seamed to hold up real well too. Those HCR's are pretty sweet though. If i was buying a 2010 it would be a coin toss between the doo and the HCR.

someone needs to inform my friends-- as polaris still has no fix for their dragon 800 motors and they had to put their sleds away with blown motors:mad::mad: 2 assaults and 2 dragons --poof 70psi on pto side.
polaris has no clue why and starting to look like they are trying to brush this problem under the rug..

I guess with customer service like that I would go with the cat 800
