HCR 800 Mods....what actually works.

I recently purchased an 09 800 HCR. I came back to Cat after owning an 07 Rev 159. I sold the Rev because of the reliability issues but all in all it was an excelent sled and with just a head and Y pipe it ran very well.

My question is what wakes these motors up? My Rev ran strong in the mountains with alot of low end. The Cat does not seem to have this in stock form. What needs to be done to get these motors to run? What has worked for you.

I have had my share of mod motors in the past and some worked and some did not. I do not believe the hp numbers some of the after market companies are claiming these days just because the porting on the newer sleds is so clean, there is just not alot that can be done to them. I can see where a Y pipe, head or head mod, or a different pipe could possibly help...but not 170hp that some are claiming.

What works...other than boost?

cat leaves a lot on the table for porting but most deal with the fuel pressure (or fuel box) and slp makes a good Y pipe, pipe and can combo. now the clutching, i don't know about the hcr but cpc and rkt have some good clutch set up's. Hope you like the cat.

I ran the fuel pressure regulators on my old Firecats..is that what you are talking about?

I raced Cat back in 04 and had the reprogramed ECU's from the race department. I ran the Hillclimb1 reprogram on my Firecat in the mountains and it did pretty well. I never had to touch the regulator with it on.

In regards to the porting, I have talked to some respectable engine builders and they are telling me the porting is clean on these motors but the heads could use some work....8 hp with porting and head work.

What have they done to your motors with porting?

I don't know exact numbers, but I can say with a head (RKT) & porting from either MPM or RKT that the M8 comes alive, I can't imagine it's only 8 hp.

PM Phatty on here, his seemed to rip pretty hard when We were with him, not sure what he has done to it, but I believe it was setup by Cutlers.

180hp?that will be on very good racefuel and fully leaned out.Its pretty hard to get more than 160-165hp on a 800 with singel pipe,pumpgas,and normal "light" aftermarked porting, to use with normal mixture on long WOT runs like we do with mountains sleds.

This M8`s have very low transfer duration and need to be raised a lot+ reworked ekshaust to wake them up.Then the midrange and trottle responce will be way better.

If you are willing to by a M1000 instead and modify it,you will get much higer hp gain for the buck than what you get on other sleds.

What altitude do you ride at? If around 10000ft get in contackt with RKT.

Talk to RKT, SLP, or Cutlers and they will tell you the M8 is not ported well at all. I installed the slp pipe on my 09 M8 at the beginning of last season and it made a very noticable difference. At the end of the season I finished the slp performance package by having them port the engine, do the head mod, install the power commander III, and I had them set up both of my clutches.
After the porting the sled runs amazing and I am very happy with it. My buddies on 09 XP's that weigh 60lbs less than me could not touch my sled. I say have someone reputable port the engine and install a good pipe. One thing I liked about slp's kit was if you intall there pipe and have them port it than they have the power commander III fuel box that comes preset and all you do is plug it in and go. Mine ran excellent with there kit and I would recommend them anyday.

Porting (didnt have mine done, but was recommended), SLP pipe, cutler clutching, and cold air intake and your set! Fuel box required with the porting.

Sled ripped, out ran XPs and dragons all year. :D

I have Cutler's "Performance kit" on my '08 Nightfire and I have been very happy with the HP gains felt. The twins combined with the head and porting make serious power!

I never rode it stock, so just for kicks late in the season this year I pulled the twins and put a SLP Y pipe and the stock pipe and can back on it and felt a HUGE power drop! Bottom end was slightly better but the mid and top end was just plain week!!! At the top a climb where I usually would be wheelieing up and over, I would be crawling and just barley make the top. So the twins went back on and ROCKIN!:cool:

I don't know where I'm at HP wise but if feels and climbs like 170HP plus!!!

I strongly recommend the CPC Performance package!:D:beer;

Next season I will be looking to race and out climb anyone that thinks they have a good running 1000 and would be up for some friendly competition!:D:beer;

Many people say twins are hard to manage.

Do you find the twins hard to keep tuned in as conditions change throughout the day? What are you running for a fuel controller, and is it able to keep pace with the twin pipes?

I have two 800's with Cutler twins on both of them. The BB '05 M6 running the Boondocker efi box is a little more temperamental than the '08 M8 running the Attitude efi box is. And when I say more temperamental I mean the EGT's are a little scary on the trails unless I just keep it pinned. The '08 runs more safe on the EGT's and the pipes fit alot better on the '08 also. Havent melted anything on the '08 like I have on the BB 800. I really don't ever worry about burning down except right out of the parking lot.:rolleyes: I really like the Attitude Industries efi box, ALLOT. Super easy to tune when I have to.:rolleyes:

I DO NOT have to adjust either one during the day. From day to day maybe but, not every day. I was VERY LEERY of the twins because of guys telling me they were fussy and had to be adjusted often and would never work for the type of riding I do. Dale Cutler told me to throw all the hearsay out the window and reassured me that he could supply me with a consistent 175hp.

I ride the he!! out my '08 and only adjust the fuel when my riding buddy is highmarkin me more then he should. His heavily modded 1M900 is the only sled besides the turbos that can out do or highmark me on my 153" M8!:eek: Dozens of XP's have fallen pray to the CPC Nightfire!:D I love it!

My engine compartment builds heat, so I've had to ventilate the hood more. And with the porting and pipes I've had to get more air to the intake with some custom air box mods to the CPC box kit.:cool:

Keep the engine compartment cool and air supplied to the motor and the thing absolutely rips like a raped ape for hours of un-interrupted boondockin fun!:beer;

?'s

ACMtnCat- sorry for all the questions.
Did you go with the entire kit as listed on the CPC web site?
If so did they give you an option as to the high comp head vs the ultra high comp head? opinions on these heads?
Do you feel the diamond drive conversion kit was a significant improvment?
Did you have the porting done from the start or was that somthing you added later?
You mentioned that you had to further mod the air box do you think their is an air box option from other companies that may better meet the needs of this set up?

Again sorry for all the questions, I'm just very interested in M8 perfomance options and want to learn as much as I can to make an educated decsion at some point. Hopefully sooner than later. Thanks for any info you care to offer.:beer;

That is one of my favorite videos !

Thanks for sharing it :)

who knows if the hcr has the same helix as the rest of the m sleds?
I have a great clutch set up for the m 8 and its a lot less $ than cpc or rkt.
and works better

Yeah did the whole kit right from the start. I went with the 7-10K head so I can run 91 pump gas. I didn't want have to run even more expensive gas by going higher compression then I did. I didn't do the dd conversion cuz I really like having reverse! I did however re-gear it with BDX's 54/66 and I really liked what that did, maybe should have gone lower to 55/65.:confused:

I had it ported from the get go. I was coming off a killer running 900 and told Dale I wanted the 900 power in the M8 chassis and light weight. In '07 the 1000's were having issues and I didn't want that so thats why I ended up on the 800 instead of the 1000.:) And when I saw the LE Nightfire, I had to have it!:D

The CPC air box works great but, I seem to have the sled upside down and under the snow much more than most people.;) So I did some surgery on that to open it up through the top of the hood. I'll try and get some pictures of it up to show what I did. The only other air box that is even close to usable for me is the stock one with some mods to it. Its just to heavy and bulky under the hood and likes to melt with these huge twins stuffed in there! Thus the CPC air box and mod.:rolleyes:

In the video I posted I had the 156" extreme on and that track just kick butt! The Power claw just doesn't cut it as far as moving snow. I am a light weight rider and don't have the trenching problems most guys do with the CE track. I'd really like to stuff a 3" CE under my m8 some day to give that a whirl! But I don't like the 162-174" length for the tree riding we do most often.:cool:

What do you have Shane? Compression / torsion? What degree is the helix?

I really like the CPC torsion kit. I'm currently running a 44/36 and a snopro green spring. Its super easy to tune on the hill.:D I do find myself adjusting it from time to time.:beer; Going from the red/white to the green snopro.

How did you get an SLP Y-pipe on with a stock pipe they don't even come close to working together. Also it has been pretty much proven that the aftermarket Y-pipes on a stock pipe do nothing and some even say they lost HP. I agree that the twins will make the most hp I just did not want to mess with all the underhood heat that comes with them. My slp pipe and porting has run strong.
