I have just purchased a 2011 Assault with the black/grey color schema and I want to change the color on the side panels to either black or white.

Since my local dealer over here takes 900usd for a new set I have been thinking about having the grey ones painted at a body shop.

has anyone tried doing this, and how did it hold up?

Any input is greatly appreciated!:)

I got a set of silver assault panels that are painted in the Orange Madness color, it was the previous owner that got them painted and he rode with them last year. Can still not see a scratch on.

here is a bigger photo of that black sled from Eric's link...

I wanted flat black to match the plastic hood and it turned out great. It made one complete season of some pretty hardcore mtn riding (we go through quite a bit of buck brush and pine tree limbs...plus Burandt rode it and that is bad on appearance because he uses limbs to brush off snow!@) and it still looks great. I also had arcticfx Jordan make me some flat black cover stickers for the places on the fenders that stick out the most thinking that would save the paint job. It worked as a few of the stickers need replacing but the rest of the paint has held up very well. I recommend this technique to get exactly what you want.

you can also go to www.snowmobilebetterboards.com to the PRO section and see quite a few pictures of that sled at different angles...for some reason they show up over on this site very small

Have a look at this thread.

Both the hood and side panels are made of HDPE (High Density Poly Ethylene)

Thanks for the link, but I'm a bit confused about the type of plastic used on the side panels. In the other thread you said the side panels were made of TPO? My grey side panels are a painted finish for sure. I'm putting an ArcticFX wrap on but don't like the grey between the pieces, so really just want to paint the gaps black. Can this stuff be painted with a rattle can, or do I need a professional job for decent results?

Thanks for posting the pics F-bomb and Sunvang nice sleds....the matte black side panels looks sick!:face-icon-small-sho

But as Trenchmaster points out, the side panels are painted straight from polaris, so I guess it should be possible for a professional paint shop to get the same finish and durability?

Is the plastic type Polaris uses for their panels very rare? I am thinking that if this is the same type of plastic used in some car fenders it should be an easy thing to have done.:face-icon-small-con

I must have been on crack last night.... (not really)...

I had IQ side panels and PRO hood on my mind for some reason.

YES... trenchmaster is exactly correct... the side panels are TPO and are VERY paintable......
Thank you for the catch.

Wow... I need a vacation!

A good prep/sand/ paint with flex additive and you are golden... use a good quality automotive paint.

If you dont want to clear coat over it... U-Tech is a great single stage (no clearcoat) very durable paint in lots of colors.
