Harley Davidson shuts down for a week

Just saw on the news that HD is shutting down production for a week because sales are way down. Employes will not be payed during the shut down. I wonder if the prices are gonna drop also?

that doesnt suprise me.. have you noticed all the harley commercials and magazine ads lately?

if you recall, a few years back, hd didnt have to do any advertising.. (jsut before and around the 100th anniversary).. you had to wait a year or so to get a new bike..

now, there flooded with them.. a million used ones available..

just not as hot as they once were.. the excitement level has tremendously dropped....

That is happing in almost all industry. You should see wood products sales. I will not lower prices anymore. When things start clicking, they will only go up. Everyone is operating at slim to nil margins.

My 2 Dents.

Here in the California 1 out of 50 homes are in foreclosure. I think disposible income is a little tight right now. A Harley is not like a sled..... you don't have to have one.

I don't think that prices would drop, because I think that they shut production down to limit the supply of bikes in the market, therefore keeping demand for new bikes up. This is just a thought, who knows. I know that I would not own any HD stock.

I know they flooded the market around here there was a crapload of them on the steets this summer.

:(

I sold my sled and bought a Harley.

Sled trip to the Bighorns (WY):
Fuel for truck: $100
Fuel for sled: $30+
Food/Drinks: $30-$50

Bike trip to 'horns (316 mi round trip FROM MY GARAGE):
Gas: $25-$30
Food/Drinks: $20-$25

Plus I've put fuel in my truck 3-4 times all summer. Bike gets 35 mpg or so in town.

I see no sled in my near future.

I said the same thing when the commercials first hit. HD is, for the first time, having to market to move product.

There are millions available on ebay due to a certain unnamed sellwhore:D

I would say if you are seeing them on the street that speaks to demand as much as anything.
I can say I see a whole lot more cruisers in general on the road than ever. I'm sure HD is feeling the pinch of increased competition- lots of good look-a-likes out there. Wouldn't go back to one but it's nice to have choices.

The New Harley, Un American Content

I know they flooded the market around here there was a crapload of them on the steets this summer.
Yep the new Harley's a crap load of crap, out sourced parts, Chinese, Japanese, cheapest provider available. Customs have come down in price competing with the Harley's for market share. Can't work on them like the oldies before AMF, hell they have 'fly by wire' on the new Glides next year, Corporate board is also shutting down production to keep demand and hence prices up, going to send Harley back to the AMF days with their corporate management! All American bike 'Polaris Victory' all the way down to the plugs and plug wires! the new "BRP" is no better outsourced parts to the cheapest supplier, good portion of all problems on the 07' and newer are due to new outsourcing of suppliers. While I'm at it Mattel, Fisher Price, Thomas trains, etc... in Kids toys are also outsourcing to China, trying to poison or children, grand children and great grand children, where's the uproar of Americans saying we won't take it any more. Oh the majority are only worried about themselves like the auto unions in Detroit this year sell out your retirees benefits and medical for your short term selfish job security. The lead poisoning of our children and what the big three American automaker union employee's did this year happened in the 50's there would be lots of dead corporate exec's in lake superior and half the country would be on FIRE!

this is what kills me about harley haters... why do you really give a fuq about it???? go ahead and ride your non-hd's and enjoy it, in the end we're all still out there tryin to enjoy the road, who really gives a fug about what someone rides???

as for hd shutting down for a week, if you guys new how bad things were in the recreational products industry you wouldn't think twice about this... many of the boat manufacturers have cut their production by almost 70% over the past 2 years (and they are STILL over producing)... harley takes a week off??? BFD

Absolutely right! Enjoy what you ride. This is the kind of thread the "greenies" are looking for, a place to drive a wedge between bikers and snowmobilers, 4-wheelers and snowmobilers, jet skier and snowmobilers. Don't kid youself, motorsports are under attack and everytime we condemn our neighbor's choice in recreation, we have become a tree hugger weither we choice to admit it or not.

1 week with out pay sucks. I've been off for 3 weeks so far for fusion on a disc in my neck with out pay. My boss was to busy riding his Harley to get us disability insurance.
