Handguards that will handle sled rolling......

I've seen the Barkbusters on Woog's Cat's but not on the Pro taper Poo's...

Any of the VOHK groupies have any pics of Erik's setup on the PRO?

Can't find a shot from the front, but looks like he's still running Acerbis BB's on his 12.

this is his 11

Cycra Guard mod

I really like the Cycra guards but didn't like the universal atv mount because it adds a lot of bars and clamps to the handle bars and the guards tilt down toward the center to mount instead of straight across as designed. The problem is snowmobile handle bars are two narrow for the regular set up to fit perfectly.

With a little fab this is what I came up with.

If you buy the "series one" alloy bar pack you get just the guard bars and shields and that's it for $62.95. http://store.cycraracing.com/seonebarpab.html

Next remove the allen bolts holding the pro taper cross member bar and drill out the clamps and bar to 1/4". Use 5" long 1/4" bolts through the clamps and out to meet the guard bars where they naturally want to sit. Drill a 1/4 hole through the guard bar where the bolt intersects it. Finally cut off the extra guard bar length that is not needed. Done.

The first and last pic shows one guard cut down to size and the other as it comes normally for comparison. The other pics show the final look. These feel really firm and strong because the Pro Taper bar clamp stabilizes the bolt.

I'll see how they hold up, but next time I would use grade 8 bolts instead. Also tighten the 5" bolt onto the Pro Taper mount before marking the new hole on the guards. Not doing this cause me to inaccurately drill the guard bar so one of the bolts is a little bent in the pic.

You can get the oversized guards to fit on the same bar if you want more coverage. They are $20.

I really love the feel of being able to lean way out on the side of the guard bar when sidehilling. Smashing through tree branches without crunching your hands will be great too! :face-icon-small-hap

Thanks for info, looks sweet. Add a short peice of tubing to cover the bolts and you're done. Any problems hitting mid windshield?

Great idea littleanthony! I'll pick up some black tubing today.

The guards swing over the little "wings" on the windshield with plenty of clearance so no worries there.

My original design needed some work. When the sled was rolled over it would bend the long bolts holding the Cycra guards.

For DIY's I got some aluminum angle bar from the hardware store and cut them down into this shape. To secure the bottom of the bracket I just used a little hose clamp so I didn't have to drill into the bars. It triangulates the support and makes them super strong for sled roll overs. I wanted to test them well before reposting, and they have now been rolled over more than 30 times on everything from hard pack to powder. Still going strong.

Just yesterday I was doing a steep hill climb through tight trees and got a little too close to a 2 1/2 inch thick big dead limb. The guard snapped the branch in half and almost stopped the sled. Glad my hand was protected!

Hope this is helpful to someone. :present:
