well we have $6000 left for plowing at this rate if he plows the whole road we will be out of funds in about 2 weeks max. the snow park is going to be before you start going up the hill. do not park in the turn around and I am pretty sure it was agreed to park on the outward lanes. they are having a volunteer clean up today. I do not remember the guys name who is running the show but the road is still closed. the guys that are running the 72 rd are really not helping since it is a wilderness reserve during the winter so snowmobiles are not allowed. and they read your posts on here so this is your warning. they have no mercy on the tabs. if you do not have a snow park permit or tabs you will be geting a ticket. rental sleds can be rented but the company who rents them out cannot bring them up to the snow park. no guides, etc. we were told about the guy who rents them out and came up with his sleds and was told but had no tabs on his sleds only a car dealer plate. That does not work. So it sounded like to the majority that the tickets were legit. Without tab money we will be even worse off on the plowing and grooming. I know I missing some stuff but someone else may ad stuff also

That's funny where does all of the money go from our snowmobile tabs and transfer fees. I think it must go to the general fund. It sure seems like a lot of people snowmobile and that should rack up alot of money to take care of plowing.

Mabie it's time to start grooming and/or plowing like they do in revy. It is done by private partys(the snowmobile club does it there) and you pay a fee each day you ride right at the trailhead. That way all the money goes towards grooming. The grooming/plowing is allways awsome and done all season.

The way it's done around here does not work. The only place it kind of does is baker and thats because the snowmobile club is involved alot to make sure it gets done right. And if money runs out to groom baker they try to pick up the slack instead of *****ing.

Not trying to be a prick but I dont understand how the grooming/plowing money is allmost gone when the groomer has been broken down most of the season. My father owns a trucking company and if his trucks break down he makes no money while they are being repaired.Whatever it costs comes out of his pocket and he makes money only when they are working. If he bids a contract job he has to finish it no matter what it costs him,he cannot quit when the bid money runs out. It's his fault if he bids to low to do the job with a profit.

Isn't grooming and plowing a bid job? Do you bid to groom from say dec to april?Or do you bid to do $XXXX amount of work and when the money runs out you are done? The groomer has only groomed a few times this year if I understand right?I'm just asking these questions to try to learn how things work.I wanted to go to the meeting but had to work.

I do understand it has taken a incredible amount of work to clear the road. But it sounds like mostly voulenteers have got that done.

It's not the grooming money that's almost out it's the plowing money for the 70
rd. There is two different account's for the grooming and the plowing of the road . Ron the guy who plows get's paid when he out there cutting tree's or whatever. What I found out last night contrary to what was said on here last year is that the grooming contract is NOT a NO BID contract so any one can bid on it and Ron the guy who plow's and groom's screwed himself after last year and bid the contract too low because he was afraid he was going to loose it.

Ok,that makes sence that there is allmost no money left if the plowing is a seprate contract. This has been a very different year for trying to keep the road open.

Staffordirt offered to plow the road for nothing. Sounded like he just wanted to help out and maybe relieve some of the pressure of the heavy snow fall.

Forest service making the calls

We all greatly appreciate Stafford dirt wanting to help out. At this time while there is plowing money available, R&R is still responsible for the plowing, There are huge liability issues with having someone else clear the road. R&R has the contract to keep the road clear. When there funds are depleted than we can go about getting permission to try and open the road back up if possible. For those who dont know, after all the work getting the road cleared thru the weekend, another 40 to 50 trees came down on monday. If one of these trees falls crushing a person, trailer, truck ect , who will be at fault? I'm sure none of us want the liability for that. I think the FS did a good job last night explaining the situation up there at greenwater. they are trying to work with all parties involved. We are dealing with a "real weird" year up there. I think all of us who were at the meeting understand the big picture, for those of you who were not, I guess we will try and keep everyone informed,

Our family was wound up prior to last night meeting but the forest service reps were very staight with us and were willing to work with everyone on the situation. As to plowing there numurous rules that must be adhered to when plowing, one of which is using equipment that does not put down pressure on the surface.ie no tracked dozers or loaders, and it probably excludes wheeled loaders due to the down pressure of the bucket. The sad part is the state within the last few years has disposed of snow blowers that have been used on the passes via ebay and other auctions. Also you must register as a parks volunteer prior to helping clear the roads, due to liability issues. It is not hard just download the form from the washington state parks web site, fill it out and give it to the forest service office. The contact is scott nordeen father sorry for forgetting his first name and probably misspelling the last. But, scott works at sumner tractor and can get in touch with him or give you a number. Also they have garmins up there running on , i believe channel 50 or 5,0
hope this helps.
Also i owned a trucking company and we were paid $100 per hour to run our equipment and that was prior to the high fuel prices, fuel and labor repairs cost a little, insurance will kill you.

So if we move the snow park down below the mattahorn, (which is fine with me!), will the road be buffed with the groomer budget?

Sounds like we can rename it Pikes Peak then!

yes it will be groomed, this week is going to be hard on it with the rain coming through. but if the snow melts the forest service said it will be moved up

I say bag the plower.
Everyone chain up.
Give the extra money for the groomer to run 3 times a week and an extra cabin.

Chained or not, most rigs won't even come close to making it in if the FS70 were to be left untouched ... clearance issue

I hope if another volunteer work crew gets formed to clear up all the windfall that a little more notice is given ... I'd have gladly been up there helping on Sunday if I hadn't heard about it at 11:30 Saturday night!

I also hope everyone plays this deal smart with the "lowered" sno-park ... parking correctly and courteously so everyone can go riding seems like a lot to ask from what I've seen at GW over the past few years (even with the improved sno-park). Funny how so few can turn the whole deal into a complete cluster-f*#k!

Get it straight people!!

This is not about the grooming..... this is about the plowing! There are (2), yes (2) diff funds!

NO PARKING in FS RD 70 turn around - You will be towed

This also came out of the meeting last night -

The road plowing contract is $20k for the season, this covers 9 miles up, 9 miles down and 2 parking lots. The clearing of the parking lots can take an easy 3-4 hr a day to clear depending on snowfall.

Using rough numbers (don't have exact hourly rate for truck/driver/plow)
If you figure $100/hr
40hr week = $12,000 in 3 weeks.

Currently the plan is to leave the remaining $6,000 Rd 70 fund to plow only the first 4 1/2 miles of the road. It will remain this way for most of the season.

We need ALL OF YOUR HELP to navigate FS Rd 70 for parking. When going up the road on the weekends there will be people at the head of the road and the turnaround letting 3-4 rigs go up and turn around and come back to park on the outward bound side of the road.

PLEASE ~ everybody follow this rule for the rest of the season, go up, turn around and return to the head of the line to park. IMPORATANT NO PARKING/CAMPING IN THE TURN AROUND AREA - you WILL be towed! If we all follow this rule of thumb it will save us all a lot of frustration.

Skippy,if you read my second post you would see that I now understand there is two seprate funds....Thats why I asked.

Sounds way way underbid. $3000.00 a week , 7 weeks of plowing? Wonder what was left on the table?
