How is Greenwater to ride? What other places does it compare to?

How is the access and parking?

My GF lives close to there so I think we will be rideing there a few times this year(if it ever snows!!)...

Thanks for any info.

better do a seach, its the road from hel!, the only place I have ever had to chain up because of ice on that hill, there have been more trucks and trailers over the edge then I-90. but once you get there its good for new people, lots of roads and meadows to ride for new folks

WOW,
An informative, polite clearly written post by Gravy....
The words are even spelled correctly.
I'm feeling dizzy:confused:

Are we all witnessing a new chapter in the life of Art, The gravy one? :D

Sorry, I digress,
Yes, the road in is nicknamed the Matterhorn for a very good reason.
14% grade up...14% grade down.
Off camber, sharp turns and very few guard rails with LOOOOoong drop-offs.
Covered with a solid sheet of either white or deceptively clear ice from the beginning of the season until the end.
I also have had to chain up to get over it when it was just "Black ice", frozen fog and I run Studs on all 4 corners. step out of your rig and fall on your azz.

I forget all the legalities but they WILL NOT sand it either although some "Private parties" have done so.

I learned to ride there and did most of my first 10 years of riding there.
I used to love the place until the first road washed away (And that one was no picnic either)
Most of the good play areas are now filled with 30 foot trees and let's just say the grooming could stand to be improved.

The riding is good but HOLY SH$T that road is scary. chains in almost any condition just due to ice and sled in the truck.

Most of the time I do stampede just cause of the BS road that the should have never paved.

Spent many great days at greenwater. All types of riding if you know were to go.The road can be a pain if you get in a hurry, take it easy no problems.

Thanks,next question...Directions to the parking area?? :face-icon-small-ton

HWY 410 to greenwater, about a mile past town on the left is the 70 road, its marked, also its just past the fire station on the left!!! follow that to the end where the snow park is!!!! if you have a deck then you wont have an issue, but if the roads bad and you have a loaded 4 place then I would carry chains... just ask curt how his first trip was!!!

when you go up and over the Matterhorn, check out the different colors of pickup paint on the guard rail on the switch back!!!!!!

What's really funny, these guys are not exaggerating and just trying to scare you (unlike so many other threads on here) . That road is a freaking nightmare!

How many guys chain up front and rear wheels?

70 Road

Yep, it can get pretty bad, I also grew up riding there and remember when the "bad" part was after the road that Y's to the left (FS7030).

The year after the road went down into the river, My brother and I wanted to ride there anyway so we took saws and such with us and just started following a dear path through the woods. (On our sleds) we worked at it for about 4 to 6 hours and finally broke through back down onto the remaining road.
It was a steep and twisted trail through the trees but it opened the area back up for everybody.

Sad part is...When the state came back to finally punch the road through and get around the slide they pretty much followed the goat path we created!

And the Matterhorn was created!
