Green River, Wyoming

I'm considering a move to Green River, Wyoming from Utah. Just wondering how many of you guys ride around there, or how far you have to go to ride? Also if any of you live there, if you could recommend a good part of town to look for homes, preferably with some room for the horses too.

Thanks for the help!

Highline....

I live in Rock Springs and am the secretary for the Sweetwater Snowpokes (ATV/snowmobile club). The good news is there are a lot of snowmobilers, a lot that aren't in the club too. Our club has a great "core" group, we do a lot rides and have a wide range of riders. Wyoming has AWESOME places ride (Pinedale, Alpine, Afton) ! You can't beat it. The bad news...it's at least 100 mi from town to anywhere to ride. Then there's even farther places... The worst news right now is probably the housing market. We are in an oil and gas boom and prices are outrageous. Maybe for some people from other markets they won't think so, but for someone who has lived here several years it's riduculous. What you could buy 4-5 yrs ago for $140K is now $275K - give or take. It is hard to find anything for rent under $1,100 +. Used to be you could find houses for around $550-$800 (approx). Most townhouses in the paper right now are around $1500/mo. Green River however, is a little better. You can go to Rocketminer.com and check out the classifieds. Oh yeah, and the paper just said housing taxes are going up 25%-35% next year. It's the 3rd yr in a row they have gone up significantly. Most people with horses in Rock Springs look to what we call "out north" of Rock Springs. I'm not sure about where in Green River, but there are definately horses there. Good luck!

PM'd you. thanks!

green river is a good place to live. have a little bit of a drive for sledding but it isnt too bad. Good news is the flaming gorge is only about 20 miles south of town. Great place to camp, boat, fish and ride horses in the summer.

if those housing prices are accurate for that area u might be better off living in alpine, wy, jackson, pinedale.......alpine and pinedale are cheaper then jackson and have great riding (within 15 min)....pm me if u need more help

The pricing of houses is starting to drop a little in GR and RS. They are way cheaper than pinedale or alpine. It is 2 hrs to good riding from here. There is sand dunes though for the summer time blues and we have a huge pond to play in called the flaming gorge.

I have a job interview up there on Friday, actually.

Don't suppose any of you guys know if Rock Springs has a 24-hour gym in town do they?

There is an Anytime Fitness here in the mall. We do have an awesome Recreation Center, but they aren't 24 hrs.

Don't suppose you'd know about Green River would ya?

:D

I know thats an odd-as-hell question, but that could quite literally dictate whether or not I take this job if they offer it ot me.

Technically the job is in Green River, not Rock Springs ... I know they're only about 20 miles apart, but that'd still suck to have to drive 20 miles to the gym both ways every day.

Don't suppose you might happen to know how hardcore of a gym the Anytime Fitness is, would ya? They got big dumbells? hahah ;)

I know weird criteria for moving to a place but I am gonna be pissed if I can't lift :(

From Green River it's going to take probably close to 1.5 to 2 hours in season to drive thru Evanston to reach Uintas. Likewise to drive to Kemmerer or Big Piney to ride in that area. 20 miles north of Kemmerer in NF is some of the best riding around. All types of terrain, semi decent trail system. PM me if you take job and move, we'll take you riding there with us anytime.

OMG! I can NOT believe how much that area has changed since my last visit! WOW.... I definitely need to get over there before it becomes a metropolis! lol

Hey all, I have some more questions about Green River ..

I went and checked it out, the AnyTime fitness will work for me if it has to ... I might wind up buying a home gym to get the stuff I really need, but either way ..

What is the housing situation like in Green River?

I have an interview with the same company for the same job but here in Vernal, which originally was my preference, to stay where I am ... but ...

One of the main reasons for me wanting to switch careers is that I am ___SICK___ of the working a 12 hour day then commuting 3-6 hours on top of that per day ...

With the new job I'd still be working 10-12 hour days most of the time but if I go to Green River, the commuting will be an awful lot less, so that could be the decider right there.

I already know that even with a pay increase I won't be able to live in Vernal without 13 room mates like I have now, so my question is .... What would I pay for a semi-decent 1 or 2 bedroom apartment there in Green River?

rent in GR is going to be around 800 to 1000 bucks a month. It is definately not the cheapest place to live. Let me know if u end up taking the job. We ride a lot and will be more than happy to show u around

drinkwyo is correct on the rent in GR. It is slightly better than Rock Springs. If you watch closely and jump on anything you find, you may find a 1/2 way decent deal.
I don't know about your job, but a lot of people are working hrs outside of town, a lot of driving, and/or staying for weeks at time in Pinedale or where ever....with living allowances.
