Grates on 04-07 Rev's just for looks or do they actually help keep snow out?

This weekend I ran into a bit of a problem with my 07 rev, we had a ton of fresh snow (a good thing) and I really took advantage of it, unfortunately the result was my entire engine bay got packed with snow, and it blew out my bottom pan. I am missing one of the metal grates on my hood..but I didn't think much of it as the mesh is not very tight and I can't see it stopping much snow from going into the engine bay.. but I may be wrong..if I'm not, whats the trick to making sure you nose end doesn't get weighed down, and packed up. Do I just need to replace the grate, or have any of you guys cut holes in the back of the bottom pan to let the snow escape.

I don't remember it happening this badly last year..but I also couldn't ride in pow last year like I am this year. I didn't find myself leaning it over as far and really getting sideways to the same extent where the front end really dips down. I also took off my sway bar which really helps it lean over.

I just took pre-filter material and overlayed it on top of the factory powder screen ... worked like a champ.:D This is what happens when there's no snow and you're pissed and bored!

Gotta remember to go easy with the Gorilla Glue ... it's like "The Blob"

I did the same thing....pre filter over all my grates and then I had to rivet the grates in because our snow gets so heavy they would pop out. Works great, motor stays dry.
