Grandview today

If your thinking Seward try the Primrose side. Other end has an is icey chute. I was there up Wednesday and it was a blizzard on the lake

Thanks for the heads up. God, I hate primrose. I was afraid with the weather the way it is, that firemans would be sheet ice.

The machine that was abandoned was hit from behind by the avalanche and pushed about 120 yards. It was only half buried, but the windsheild and handlebars were broken from the impact and the entire sled was full of hard packed snow. They found his backpack, but never did find his helmet. The snow was about 10 feet deep over where they had been parked! They sent me some awesome pictures that I'll resize and post tomorrow.

Lucky lucky lucky! I'm so glad they had time to get moved!

Please continue to be careful and prepared friends!

That's just too crazy! Lucky guys!

I have the rubber band around the kill switch as well and I have seen people who turned it toward the windshield so they would not hit it. My reverse button is broken off, so no problem there either....

Pic of avalanche starting to drop

Here's a pic showing how far away we were from where it started... Center left of pic you can see it starting.... If anyone would have been on the face when it started would be buried....

Wow!! That's impressive. Glad you guys are safe and sound. Thanks for putting the pics and video up for us all to see. Whenever I have the opportunity to see a recent avalanche, via pics or in real life, I always try to see what I can learn because who knows maybe something I learn might save me someday. Two things I learned from these pics. First, I will now be standing/resting farther from steep slopes than I did in the past. Second, and I would have never picked this up without seeing the before and after pictures, is that I now know why there is a big gap of only smaller trees between the big trees on the right and left. In the after picture it looks like an avy path with everything covered up, but in the before pic I didn't really see the path, the trees in there aren't that small...scary I must need more training. Thanks again for the photos.

PS while we're on the subject, there is a great 'Beacon Park' next to the tram station parking lot at Alyeska. Its free and available to anyone. It only takes 20-30 minutes to get in some great training. I was there today and it was a bit humbling.

My Son Brett and I were up there at Grandview on Tuesday and had an absolute blast!! Incredible snow!!
So I decided to take him and my daughter back up on Wednesday with a couple of other friends. We took their snow boards to do some back country riding. The first 4 hours of riding was the best I have been in! The pictures you will see can prove it!
At around 2 or 3 PM we decided to do some snowboarding. I took my 18 yr old daughter up the mountain and dropped her off on a shelf and went down to pick up my son brett so they could ride together. As I was coming down I could see Brett waving his hands frantically! I look back and there was a title wave of snow coming right at me! I punched it and flew down the mountain 80 mph (just a guess) flew throught some trees down a 60 foot drop, hit hard but still had my throttle crimped tight, started to climb out of the valley but got sucked into some trees! It felt like I was getting buried with all the snow falling off the trees and the wind and snow from the avalanche! Thank God I did not but now I go into super panic mode because my daugher was up there buried somewhere? When the snow finally settled where we could see the mountain my heart started to beat again when I saw her poking up out of the snow 1/2 way up the hill. I dropped to my knees and thanked God over and over again! The slide broke about 1000 feet above us, 90% of the snow landed where I dropped her off on the bench. It hit her and squirted her out and down the mountain about 600 feet. She said she saw it coming, took her foot out of the binding and jumped!
I can not begin to tell you how tremendously shook up I was! The thought of having to tell my wife that her daughter is gone was almost more than I could bear! But with Gods grace and mercy we are all still here and ALIVE!
We took about 30 minutes to recover and thank God we were okay and then we spent the rest of the day shredding the powder! That crazy girl wanted to ride right back up on top of the avalanche and kick its ***! So she did!
While we were riding we ran into Matt Jones the guy whos sled got taken down the mountain just a half mile from where we were. They were almost as shaken up as we were!
We all ride with beacons but that is most likely just to help find the dead body! I doubt that we will do any more back country snowboarding in the spring! We were very aware of the avalanche danger and took the risk of trying this one hill. We love this sport more than most so we will continue to ride but I can tell you we will stay away from the danger zones!

Enjoy the pictures! I was not in the mood to take any of the avalanche!

What a story you thankfully lived to tell. We went to Grandview that day and climbed the shoot on the spencer side and decided it was just to dangerous there and left. We ended up having a great day in other areas of the placer drainage instead. Glad to see you and your family made it out safe.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Rob. Spike is both upset he didn't get to go with you guys, and thankful at the same time. You guys certainly had someone above watching out for you that day. I talked with Chrissy thur morning after I had heard about the avy but I did not know who was involed in it. I figured she would know....That one hit a little too close to home for her. Let this be a warning/lesson to all.

Great pictures, video and story as usual Rob. I'm glad you guys are ok man! I bet you were pretty shoooooock up!

Tell your boy I like his Freddy Kruger looking red and black pull-over jacket!:D

Brett was going to call spike but decided he better not tempt him to skip school!
Dave I will tell Brett you like his coat, he will get a kick out of that:)

Thanks for all your nice comments!
