Looking for any suggestions on Grand Mesa area. Never been there and wondering if its a good area. Looking for any input. Thanks!!

800 square miles of riding there, just about any kind of riding you like if you know where to go. Grand Mesa Lodge and Alexander lodge are close together either is great but I use Grand Mesa Lodge because it is a lot cheaper....hotel rooms start at $55.00 a night and non ethanol gas onsite.

Grand Mesa Lodge has a Facebook page with plenty of pics and a webcam if you are curious to see what it looks like.

Love both Alexander and Grand Mesa lodges as well.

You may also want to check out Electric Mountain Lodge (Paonia, CO) and lodging in Cedaredge as well.

Fantastic area and many options. Some time behind the computer planning will pay off in the long run.

Best,

Quinton

My suggestion is to plan the trip between Feb 15 and May. Lots of folks think it snows early here, which isn't usually the case. By mid Feb you should have epic snow on the Mesa. I never plan on being able to ride much in SW CO until January, though last season I had a few very good Dec rides. Just know that the season runs late compared to MN. Feb, March and April are the best riding months here.

Agreed. Epic mid and late season snow. Tons of terrain. And the best part..... almost never busy.

TWIT ALERT! Ouraysledder is back under a hider, did your ouraysledder account finally get banned?

This is grand mesa today.....yeah no snow there till feb right? We have ridden there the last 5 Thanksgivings in a row. Now granted 2 and 3 years ago was rideable but marginal but last thanksgiving was 3 foot of fresh on 3 foot of base. You can count on anytime after December to be great riding there. There is a webcam YOU be the judge of when to go.

Not busy? I guess it depends on what you are used to... The Mesa is a zoo compared to the places I ride.

I said "almost never busy". As in, not busy every time. Every time I've been there we see the occasional sledder group and can quickly lose them. idk what honey hole you ride but I'm glad its not the same ones I do. Your name is just a little off though. You aren't the "toolbag" your the whole toolshed.

Grand Mesa popped my cherry out west for riding, and I have been back the last 5 years. I love it out there, not to mention all of the great people I have met out there. As said above there is a wide variety of terrain for most everyone. I would recommend going later in the season if possible. It's not that they don't get the snow, they for sure get that, but it's more of covering up the F-350 sized boulders that lie underneath. After traveling from the midwest the last thing I want to do when I get there is tear something off and spend time repairing it instead of riding. There is a lot of terrain, I have always used and would recommend a GPS just in case I got lost. My $0.02

Depending on how the election goes tomorrow I may just have to move out there and then I won't have to worry about losing riding time!!!

I agree with this. Early season is good for testing and sleds that are not deep powder sleds. There are some places early season that are drifted in and deep if you know where to go. Early season you want to avoid some known rocky areas, inquire at whatever lodge you stay at and they will guide you. After December is the "don't bring a short track sled" kind of snow, years back it was so deep guys were riding over the cabin roofs....lol.

Hard to not have a good time at Grand Mesa.

Yeah and that's all melted today.

Grand Mesa is at it's best later in the season and if I were coming for only one week, I'd definitely wait until after mid January at least. The Mesa has some of the largest rocks you are ever going to see so letting some snow accumulate is a real good idea. Being local, I start riding up there as soon as I possibly can, which sometimes has meant some road riding in late October and we are almost always riding (carefully) by Thanksgiving. But again, If I had limited chances to ride up there, I'd wait.

Mesa Lakes Lodge is once again open to snowmobilers. Andy Brito, the owner, is really trying hard to cater to snowmobilers this winter. He has worked with the Forest Service to re open the trail to his lodge and is talking about getting his own groomer. I hope he succeeds. It's fun to have options for lodges to visit.

Lodges - every one of them has a website, just google it.

Alexander Lake Lodge
Electric Mountain Lodge
Grand Mesa Lodge
Mesa Lakes Lodge
Vega Lake Lodge
And at the very eastern end - Ski Sunlight. They have gas as long as you call ahead to their snowmobile rental center. It's about 75 miles from Alexander to Ski Sunlight so you do need to do a little planning.

All of these are accessible by snowmobile. The Mesa can be crowded in spots but the thing is huge and you can always find places to ride that don't have crowds. Just venture out away from the lodges.
