Going to Grand Lake for the first time over New Years with the family. We typically ride the snowies or rabbit ears. Does anyone have any suggestions or information to share? We are renting a cabin real close to the trail system. I am looking for good areas to ride for beginners and for advanced riders. A couple days we will have the wives along...a couple days without them. How are the snow conditions typically for Jan 1st? Anything entertainment wise we can take the family to other than snow skiing?

Thanks
Brian

It's a great place for a family getaway. The trail system is usually good, but try to go in the morning when the trails are in better shape, and to avoid some of the rental crowd. There are quite a few places to get off trail, but not nearly as many as someplace like the snowies has. As for the town activities, yes there's quite a bit to do there. Take the family to the theater and watch a play, ice fishing if that's your thing, plenty of shops and restaurants, cross-country skiing at the alpine center, snowshoeing, sledding for kids, etc.

Hot Sulphur is awesome! Many pools, different temps, small intimate to large swimming pools. Changing rooms and other services on site. As far as riding areas, get a map, there all good, pony park, hatchet, whisky are all good play areas for beginners, gravel mtn for hill climbs. Trail goes into town too. Back side of gravel has alot more unexplored areas, less riders as well. There's huge groomed trails, and narrow tight single tracks. We like going to the eagles nest, kinda hidden, one way in, one way out, overlooks the town.( I also purposed to the wife there) its off the north end of whisky near the main trail. Good luck! Have fun!

Brian, Since your cabin is close to the trail system are you planning on riding in GL area only or will you trailer? Snow conditions should be good. They have been getting decent snow with a fairly large system on the way today thru Wed. Like the other said. Tubing in Fraser would be fun with the kids as well as Hot Sulpher Springs (about a 30 min drive) Strawberry Park is way too far to drive in my opinion. There should be lots of activities in town as well (fireworks on new years eve). If your willing to trailer for a little while there are quite a few other areas to ride that are close.

We plan on riding in the GL area, but if we need to trailer to explore more we can to that to. Tubing and Hot Sulpher Springs does sound like fun for the kids. Thanks for the information. What other areas are close to Grand Lake that we should consider?
