gps phone apps

I had a customer the other day talking about a app for your phone that displays maps and can show where others are with the same app. Does anybody know what app this is or a decent app that can be ran off without service.

backcountry navigator pro

get a 16 or 32gig SD card, so you can download the highest resolution. Once your off the grid, you can pull up any of the maps you've created. click " my location center " and boom your displayed on a topo map you've built previously. amazing when you in a whiteout or fog or at night.

Costs like $12 to install Pro version. Building smaller maps helps organize your riding area, larger maps takes more time to build and you'll need to pull the data off your home network. My map of the Grand Mesa is almost 3gig in size.

Having a large screen on your phone helps, too.

I use backcountry navigator pro and love it. I don't know of an app that can have others on it without any service.

If there is an app which shows your gps location and the location of others, it would require cell phone reception, right?

You would need cell service to see other people's location.

I use Gaia GPS on my iphone6 in airplane mode. Download the maps you need and use it offline all day long. It also shows your historic tracks which is hugely helpful to understand where you are and to give you some known 'outs'. Biggest drawback is iPhone is susceptible to turning off when too cold. Put it in your jacket and it shouldn't be a problem.

Cell service or be on a 2-up to use bluetooth. Although if you were on a 2-up, you probably know where your other riding buddy is :face-icon-small-ton:face-icon-small-ton

I wonder if an app could do this using wifi direct. I think I'll try my hand at writing an app to test this theory. Supposedly wifi direct can reach over 600 feet.

I always thought it would be interesting to put a map online where anyone can edit it and mark areas of interest. That way when people visit they will see areas that have slid in the past(and avoid), some cool scenic stuff, and where to find some great jumps and such.

Forgive me for not being tech saavy when I ask this...
Can my Iphone show my current gps location on the iphone display without cell service?

but don't buy it and blame me if it doesn't work. I don't own an iPhone and can't test to see if it does work as stated. :)

I had an IPHONE way back and connected GPS while had phone reception ... still worked when no phone reception since it ran on satellite GPS. Cant remember the program !

I run an Android phone now

BUT all phone types should work.

We switched to airplane mode on our phones. That's the advice we got. Anyone else have an opinion on that?

from the way duffy made it sound at his avalanche course this fall, airplane mode is not sufficient. phone needs to be OFF.
