First time was in cook city,,beautiful clear night good camP fire,, second in the snowies again clear night, both times I made a list of things I wanted incase it happened again, then this past march, thought it was spring riding temps in the 40s clear skys, played in the back country all day and was wearing light spring gear, big mistake ,',and was takin a short cut bac to the place and ran into a blizzard at the NO and O intersection had to build a shelter ,,, glad I had my hand chain saw or else it would have been death, viz dropped to about 5 feet I lost sight of the stakes and temps dropped like a rock ,,wind died down around 6am,, when we got out of our hole the sleds were filled up with snow, took an hour to clear the air boxes and clutches, with frozen gloves by the way,, when we got back Gary At the place was just getting ready to call SAR 8am , he said there were 65 mph winds and 0 viz that night and didnt think SAR would have went out till the sun came up,65 mph winds,,,,thats why we couldnt even get a flare lit, but if i could have followed a GPS I probably could have made the Quely hut,,Live and learn, mabe next time I just learn,,LOL!!!And 9 times wow!! I was told you die on the 4th one!!!LOL

Glad you made it out okay!

Also glad you were prepared to stay the night. SAR would have gone out, even with the strong winds. But it would not have been until morning, unless there is an extreme concern. Like a known medical condition or young child envolved.

In most cases where the call come in later in the evening SAR meets for a briefing around 6:00 am so that means leaving say green rock about 7:00 am ish.

It just go to show how we as riders need to be prepared for the worst. Its a big area and easy to get turned around, have done it my self!

TMK's maps rock by the way, use them myself!

I came across this and was trying to determine if I could order this and the Topo maps from garmin and then overlay them on top of each other. I think that would be the way to go by having the topo map with the trails on top of it. I assume you would have to get the cd versions of both and then make a custom one on the computer before loading it onto the GPS.

The custom maps link that I provided above does the same thing. You can load your topo maps in as the base map on your GPS unit and then the trail map overlay that I created in google earth gets loaded in "on top of it". I can then toggle the trail maps on and off if I want to see the base topo.

So I guess it depends on whether you want to spend money on maps, create your own, or use the ones that I posted.

If you have a smartphone, look for an app called "Polaris Trails". Don't worry, it'll work for AC, Ski-Doo and Yamaha sleds as well. :face-icon-small-ton Only problem I see is if you don't have cell coverage I don't think the GPS function in your phone will work.

I was having problems figuring out at what point to rename the file. Got it figured out though and got it to open up in Google earth. Looks great, I'm just going to get the Topo maps from garmin and then overlay your trail map on it. Thanks for all your work on it. :thumb:

The prelaoded SD card with the Topo maps from garmin will still allow me to add the custom map correct?

It isn't the SD card that determines what can be loaded, it is the model of you GPS and the software on your GPS. As long as your gps unit allows you to load "custom maps" then you should be fine. (mine is the model 62s and it works great)

From the Garmin website these are the units that you can do custom maps on:

Dakota
Oregon
Colorado
GPSMAP 62 series
GPSMAP 78 series
Edge 800
Montana series
Rino 6xx series
Astro 320 series
eTrex 20 and 30

Now you guys have my attention. I've read the garmin instructions on how to take a paper map and overlay it into the garmin.

They make it look straightforward and simple but in real life - Is it pretty easy to do? I don't have one of those garmins but would consider buying one if it really is as easy as it looks.

TMK,, I have topo loaded in my colorado now,,, is there an advantage in the snowies to use the Higher res version of topo?I belive the standard as supplied from garmin is the 100K version? but I see they have another one for more money?

KAWGRN,

I run the 24K maps in my rino and yes there is much more detail, like forest roads and such. I came in real handy last season when we blew an engine and had to find the best route out .

The loading of the maps to the GPS unit is the easy part IMO. The hardest part is getting the jpeg maps for the different riding areas and then lining them up perfectly in Google Earth. I had to convert the pdf file for the Snowy's from the state website to a jpeg - then I did a bunch of cropping of all the stupid text boxes that they put on the map. I found that I had to do a slight rotation of the map on google earth to get it to line up better. It is not perfect - but pretty darn close. Disclaimer - I am not responsible if you get lost :)

FWIW the Colorado snowmobile trail maps that I found on the internet are 1000 times easier to work with - they line up perfectly in Google Earth without having to do any rotations and do not have any text boxes covering up riding areas.

If anyone has a 2011-2012 jpeg trail map of the Snowys that does not have any of the text boxes let me know. I am looking for a clean map with only the colored trails that is to scale. I tried to get one last year with out any success.

I had a map from about 5 years ago with actual road numbers on it ,,,I think it was a forest service map that they had drawn in the colored lines on then made copies ,,I will see if I still have it somewhere

I have the rino 530hcx so I won't be able to overlay the trail map over the topo map. But can I just install just the trail map or maybe be able to toggle between the two or am I stuck just only being able to use garmins topo map? I just got it a little while back so I haven't gotten a chance to use it much.

To my knowledge you will not be able to upload the maps that I created to a 530hcx - the custom maps feature was added to the new rinos that they released earlier this summer.

There used to be a file floating around somewhere for the older GPS units that had all of the Snowy Range trails marked as routes and the intersections as waypoints. That is an OK solution IMO - but it uses up some of your routes and waypoints to get a "map" on your GPS.
