Got Skier thumb? Whats your trick..

I got skiers thumb on my right thumb, so I keep dislocating it when I screw up.. I can't be the only one out there whats your tricks to not messing up your thumb every time you land to hard, or hit the breaks to quick.

I take my thumb off the throttle when landing/braking hard etc. I keep my fingers on the brake and my thumb on the throttle when in the air for adjustments, but soon as I get leveled out and start descending I make a fist around the bars if I think I'm going to hit hard.

I always thought you were supposed to give her a little gas as you impact, i've been afraid to take my handle of the throttle in fair of well.. face planting.

I have mastered jumping with no hands. Its easy, just jump like 30 feet out and once you levle out, let go of the bars :D

Honestly... i do that on a 900 159 poo. I have ski'ers thumb because i dislocated it and broke 3 bones in my thumbe so i know whats up. Use your palm as much as posible, twist the throttle way up on the bars, and work your thumbe out ot biuld up the muscle. Deal with hte pain, i have to :)

You should've had surgery bro! I tore the pee out of my right thumb in '01 in a MC desert race. I elected to have surgery and am glad I did. My right thumb feels about 98%. I just got over breaking my left thumb 12-14-07. Just bones this time, no UCL. So I hope the left comes back at 100%. As for the right, it really never bothers me while riding. I also motorcross a couple of days a week an a CR500(lot's o' vibration!!) and my right thumb is okay then too! Good luck brother.

Ohh i had surgery done! lol, worst 2 months of my life. :clock:

Brahm, honestly, rotate your throttle up so you press down with it more. It takes a wile to get used to but i use my palm for my throttle. :face-icon-small-win

thanks guys, I picked up a lefty, and I'm gonna try rotating it, not really keen on getting the surgery mid winter..... and I already owe the hospital enough $$$ from the first time it tore.

but as far as jumping.. all kidding aside? You're not supposed to give it gas as you land? Just level it out?

I had 2 surgeries on mine, wires, buttons and all. I had to work up the strength again, still on a long day of riding. . it gets tired. I switched my throttle around to pull at first. . not my best choice. Then I had a 2 stage throttle put on. That made a BIG difference. I used a thumb thing from RUOutside. That kept it warm, less fatigue. Now I ride without any devices. I do get tired some days. Then I use my lefty more often. I also have a device that screws into the throttle I got that allows me to change thumb positions while riding.

A few years ago I got tossed over the bars upon landing on a really flat-light day... Somehow while tumbling with the sled, I stuck my hand in the track, and my right thumb went around the rear bogie wheel!
Then came out with a sideways 90 degree bend in it
Its a good thing I run a loose track, I'm lucky it didn't rip it off...
To this day it still has a mean curve in it, and I can't totally straighten it... But never notice it... so whatever...

Also. while we're on the subject I dislocated my shoulder a couple weeks ago, and had to put it back in myself, while lying in the snow screaming... Rode the rest of the day, and the next day too!

man.. you gotta watch that is this your first time. I destroyed my right shoulder, dislocated it when I was 16 popped it back in myself, then just went on like nothing happened probably dislocated it a several dozen times until I couldn't get it back in anymore, had to go to the hospital to get it put back in $$$$$$ they said re-hab..FAILED.. would wake up with my arm dislocated, dislocated walking the down stairs, or reaching across my car to hit the locks ( didn't have power locks)... Eventually got the suergery, about 4 years after.. ...I was doing B1's in on my snowboard touched down on landing.. POOF.. out it went.. and back in it won't go (once you pop it out enough you make a pocket and you can't re-locate it yourself)... from there I tried to rehab it a ton.. worked great until I dislocated it swimming.... about 6 months after the snowboard accident...Now I get sketched when I try to paddle out. It's always in the back of my mind.. If you ever get to the point where you can't re-locate it your self.. your ****ed....and what sucks about shoulder dislocation is once it's back in you feel great.. and you forget that it's injured...until you dislocate it again.

I'm getting one of these.. hopefully it will help....otherwise I'm always going to be holding back.

Thats funny...
My shoulder is at the point where it falls out randomly, ALL the time. Its a pain in the A**!!!
I had it pop out on an 60+ft cliff jump into water (good thing I had friends who knew what was going on, and were off the cliff behind me about 3 secs later to help with the rockclimb back out)... Or leaning against the bathroom counter(with a horrible flu) and having it fall out while puking... :(
And that is the EXACT shoulder brace that I own, and have for years. But, my shoulder has been good for a year or so, so I wasn't wearing it at the time. But I can't even count how many times its fallen out...
stupid feeble limbs

LOL, You rock haha. It happens randomly I don't know why.. i was just jumpin off 60 foot cliff! lol.

But all kidding aside, you got that brace? How'd you like it? Have you ever popped it out w/the brace? Did you find it restricts you when riding? ect ect.

Never popped it out with the brace on... (knock on wood) and It doesn't restrict one bit, once your used to it. I wear it under my body armour, for both sleddin and dirtbikin....
Make sure you use the extra velcro straps that come with it, for more support
two thumbs up, on the brace though!

dislocated mine too, it's super ex to dislocate after the first

go get checked, you might have torn your rotator cuff...your shoulder will never be the same if you did (I did)
I'm saving up leave to get mine repaired, shoulder comes apart way too ez now and locks upright

edit: lol guess I'm not alone, good find on that brace I'll try it out. My shoulder is like what you all discribe, if I lift my arm up too high too fast it falls out and locks upright. I hafta lift my arm up with my good hand to get it back in place so it'll come back in socket.

My rotator cuff is also torn loose

major surgery in my future

What about a twist throttle? I saw a guy in the X Games with one and he was able to do all that crazy stuff in the air so I imagine it would work well for you guys too...

Just had my left shoulder totally replaced last May--too many years of dislocates, even after a Bristow proceedure. Was riding in December Took about 12 months to totally heal with 80% movement.

Yes, you have to give it gas while in the air otherwise you will lawn dart. If you are too nose up, tap the brake to bring it down and have the power on at landing.

I have been Disloacating my shoulder, and shoulders for the past 20+ years. One day it fell out 6 different times after my throttle stuck And I reached for a tree to knock me off the sled. My sister is a massage theapist, She introduced me to Puritans Pride's/ GLUCOSAMINE CHONDROITIN MSM. It is all natural, and before I started to take it, I maybe had 60% motion, and if i sneezed wrong it would fall out. I also thought I would never be able to throw a ball, Heck i couldn't even wash my armpit.

With all that said, I can throw as far as my 20 year old nephew, and I have full range of motion, NowI only take the stuff if I feel it gettin sore, And there is still the probable of hurting it again, But it only takes a couple weeks for it to heal.. Givve it a try i live by the stuff.

flip your throttle over so it is like a watercraft throttle. Makes sidehilling on both sides a breeze. No need for a left handed throttle.

Also, injuries like that get irritated with motion in teh same form for excessive periods, try this and it may alleviate the pain.
