got myself an ebay nightmare!!! SOLD A BOAT...

well, its not really ebay thats the problem but..

anyway, i sold a boat on ebay wednesday night.. guy that bought it was 3 hours away and he was here the next morning to pick it up.. everything was fine with hime so he gives me the money and takes the boat home..

2 days later, he calls me saying it runs like crap etc..etc.. he calls a mercury guy near his house, the guy comes out takes it for a spin apparently runs crappy.. merc guy puts his computer on it and tells him it needs an ecu (computer).. $1800!!!!!

keep in mind, i drove this boat over 60 miles a few days prior. NO PROBLEM!!
also, keep in mind, i am not a dealer or a business..

WHAT DO I DO?????

buyer beware IMO... however you probably dont like to get burned on buying something either...

Happened to me once.. however it was a little cheaper fix.. I split the cost with the guy after I fax'd him the legal proof that it was his problem.. in the end both parties were happy..

Did you have him sign a bill of sale?

If you know the motor was running fine then I'd have him show you what it's doing. He just might be trying to scam you.

Sounds like a typical scammer to me. Should have put it in the water yourself and test it out with him first.

Did you not have a thread on here awhile ago asking why your boat wasn't running right? Is this the same boat or different one? In my opinion it is buyer beware, if you knew it had a problem perhaps a 50/50 split on the parts. Again just my opinion you have to do whatever you think is right.

thats the day i sold it..

I always took the stance if it was working for you before you sold it you have no clue if he did something or not when he drove it. If he did not want to take it for a spin thats his fault.

Take it to a reputable merc dealer and put it on the computer. Just because one mech says it the ECU, doesn't mean hes right.

So you put the post on the day you sold it and it was two days later when he called and told you the problems, you must have known the problem before yopu sold it. I never buy or sell a boat without an extensive sea trial the one time I did it ran fine in the guys driveway but after opening it up it ran crappy and would not idle, discovered it was cracked,the guy took it back, it had been with his son in law and he was not aware of the problem, boy I bet the son in law caught hell. With that said $1,800.00 bucks for a ecu seems rediculous. Swampy:eek::beer;

Drive the 3 hours and put the boat in the water. Try it out, if it is running like crap go with him to a Merc Mechanic and get a second opinion. Then do what you think is right about helping him out on the price of the repair. If he doesn't want you to put it on the water and run it then tell him to shove off.

Boy that's a tuff one i would do some research if it was running fine when ya sold it that's the way it is but me i would feel bad about it and look into it go with him to a mechanic and get a second opinion. how much i helped out on the bill would be in direct relation to what it sold for. if ya already stooped over backwards to make the sale and he came out smelling like a rose i wouldn't split it 50 50. but he should have checked it out before he drove away you should have put it in the water to protect yourself as well as he should have insisted a test drive

boat sold the night of the 19th.. he picked it up the morning of the 20th.. 22nd was the day he called me and said it ran like chat and the key switch wasnt functioning correctly. previous to that, i drove the boat over 60 miles in a weeks time.. boat ran perfect. he cane to the house to get it, we put it on a hose and had no problems. i offered a sea trial and he declined.

i have sold many, many cars, motorcycles and boats on ebay.. thats what i do.. i have 338 feedback 100% positive. i dont fawk anyone over. i tell it like it is. in this case that it runs (ran) perfect, which it did!

im trying to find a used ecu.. that should be next to impossible..

If it truely went down like you just described it you have nothing to worry about. If it didn't, only you know if it didn't, then that would be your guilty conscience telling you you have a problem. In the end only YOU know what really happened and your the one that has to live with yourself just remember karma can be a b*tch.

went down precisely like that.. one thing i didnt mention is: he came to inspect the boat and obvilously approved of what he was buying. we hooked the boat to his BMW X5  followed him to the bank where he was to pay the $19277.. i sit in the parking lot for him to come out. he hands me a cashiers check for 10k and an envelope and says "we counted it 3 times" and walks away to the boat which was probably 50 feet away.. i sit in my truck and count what was supposed to be $9277.. 1st count: short $100.. 2nd count: short $100.. 3rd count: short $100.. now i feel like an arsehole knowing i have to tell him its $100 short,.. so, i say: jim, this is $9177 not $9277.. he says we counted it 3 times and hes not trying to fawk me.. i say, im not t rying to fawk you either but, i counted it 3 times.. so, he pulls out a $50 and says "ill split it with you".. i say no, i dont want it, i dont want you thinking im tryin to fawk you and you dont want me thinking that either so, just keep it..

well, after telling numerous people this story, they all come up with the same conclusion.. we were in the bank parking lot.. if he really thought the bank shorted him $100, why didnt he go back in or at least offer to go in and tell them he was short $100??? point is, he knew he was tryin to fawk me out of $100 and got away with it..

so, you say karma is a b!tch, i agree.. now hes getting his!!!!
