Got a KING CAT today....

Well, I sold the polaris 900 last season and picked up an 05 king cat project today for under $2,000. It has the following:

952 miles
162" track
fox adjustable shocks
CPI twin pipes
Light weight can
SLP air box
Team clutch
V force reeds
left hand throttle
3 inch riser
Extra venting
hand gaurds
Windshield bag
Saddle bag
Extra belt
Cover

Now, the reason it is a project is because the guy smoked one of the pistons. Just wanting to know from some of you professionals how big of a job this is going to be. Should I do a whole top end rebuild or just the one side? Should I go through the bottom end to make sure there is no metal down there from the burn down? The guy says he ran it at low altitude for too long and that is why it got nuked. (See attatchments, if they load.)

if it was mine a complete top end rebuild and off to the moutains i would go. the piston doesnt look extremely bad so i would just clean up the lower end and reassemble with new pistons gaskets and hone or replate the jugs. but this is only my opinion and what i would do.

Agreed.

That's along the lines i was thinking. Do a top end on it, have the cylinider(s) worked over, coated if necessary, clean the bottom end out, inspect bearings. I figured 952 miles, everything else should be in good shape.

Whats a top end usually cost....pistons, gaskets, rings, bearings, etc..?

Wheres a good place to get the parts from? I live in Northern Utah.

Looks like you should be able to get by just cleaning that cylinder up with some acid. A little dimple below the ports does not affect them.Usually I put spi coated pistons in and could do both pistons gaskets and wrist pin bearings for around $250 to $275. There was a guy on E-bay that lived about 100 miles from me that sold the piston sets for $160 and complete gasket set for around $50. Had to go to a cat dealer to get the bearings and they were expensive, I think around $30 each

when fresh

When you get it all fresh, go through the carbs and write down jetting. then check on here with KK owners that don't burn down once a year, ask what they run.

Make sure the still ok piston has some good piston wash !! these things need good bunch of gas, not an efi, so lots of fuel has to dribble through those carbs. Mid range burn down is what kills most of the 800/900 carb engines. too lean in mid range, so when you just go easy coasting down a trail, that when they burn. No big deal to put big enough mains in to blast hills, its the easy riding that sends all the KKats to the junk pile.

Forget everything you just read. ('05s are EFI)

Top end is probably all you need. Use cat pistons and get them from freeagent. Shes the best.

NO

NOT SO,, they were both carb and efj......... The 06 was the last year and that one was efi only.....

If it truly is an 05 and EFI you will just burn it down again running twin pipes without some kind of fuel control.

I agree John on the Twins

My KK Is a 05 carb model, my personal opinun is dump the twin pipes and get a SLP or Black Magic Single pipe and you will have alot less problems with burn downs, always vary the trottle in the midrange or else:face-icon-small-disMADDOGWFO PS mtgoat I think you got a heck of a deal, a clean ride there, also if I were you I would replace the drive chain, these big Cats are hard on stock chains

Twins are very hard to tune and then it only last for an hour on any given day and you are back to tuning. One pipe always runs hotter than the other so you get different draft through each. When they run they really go but are prone to do things just like what you are seeing. Easier with efi and a control box but most are still hard to keep running right.

If the ring lands are OK and no big scratches above the ports, looks like you could get by with a set o rings, some emory cloth to clean up the piston, muriatic acid to the bore and run er. :face-icon-small-win:face-icon-small-ton

When I was running my 03 900 I had the mag side piston toast itself twice. Both times the PTO side piston was still good. If the other piston still looks good, leave it alone and run it.
