good and bad 02 summit 700 w/ 159

I loved my 01 700. About 124 Hp stock. 02 had the suspension setback so it gets up on the snow easily, easy to throw around, not the most "flicable" sled, but better than alot in that erra.

Engine was reliable, had about 4500 miles on it before I got rid of it and it still goind. I had porting and high compression heads.

Chassis is dated and it doesn't climb nearly as well as the newer chassis with comparable HP. The 700 RMK of same erra would walk away in a climb( but that was a very strong engine at about 136 stock), but I liked the handling better than the RMK.

Depends on the price, but I would look for a an older 800 rev or an M7, you can find them cheap on here, depends on what your budget is. JMO

Good luck

I don't think I would pay over $2500 for a summit that is in good shape.

hard to beat that price as long as she runs good! If you put some tall risers on and pull the sway bar, she will boondock and sidehill MUCH better!

oh ya those are a must for me but is there any things i need to look out for. do they have a tether or key. do they have a throtle saftey and how much room do i have for risers w/ stock cables and wires. do the running boards hold snow. how is the get up and go compared to the newer sleds like the xp and m-10 or d8

they have a tether. I think you will have to extend all of your cables and wires if you want to go higher than 4 inches. The running boards hold snow, and lots of it. Its not going to have the getup n go that the newer sleds you have listed will. But none the less those 700 have good power and are quick sleds. If geared right with that 159, it should get around pretty well. You aren't gona be climbing with the big dogs with it since the chassis is outdated and you will have 30 less horse than those sleds. But don't get me wrong, I had two zx's and loved them to death.

lots of room for improvement if you decide to keep it and do a little mod work. BJ make a killer 730(?) motor that runs 670 pistons, that could get you up around 145-150 hp. In a straight up climb, the zx has a hard time, but with taller riser, no swaybar, and some other little suspension mods, I have yet to come across a chassis I like better for boondocking, probably why I'm still running one!

You should be able to run the 4" risers without changing much more than possibly a throttle cable ext. from PowerMadd.
Cut a few wire ties and move the wiring around before you plan on extending everything, might save a little work.
RKT head, HPS can, Dynoport pipe all wake the motor up. Watch your compression, if the stock single rings are pitted or flaking, replace the pistons and rings with dual ring setup.
Boss seat is great on them, drop the skid out of the tunnel as far as you can with the stock brackets, or go longer than stock and may have to drop the front arm mounting hole down on the tunnel to get transfer back, is great for more clearance.

I have an 03 700 with a 156" track. I like it, a lot. Risers - I got about 5" out of mine with careful relocation of what was there. 4 is safe, 5 can be doable, at least on some sleds - hard to say, I've seen posts claiming 4" was tight, others claiming they did 6" without changes.

I put Simmons Gen2s on mine, too - I like them, but they do affect sidehilling/getting it on edge.

I geared mine to 19/46. Stock was 21/43? I think? Pretty big change, and nearing "too low" on groomed roads, although I'm trying a different driven-clutch spring that allegedly will help fix it. I have the purple spring in there, and supposedly, it is stiff/soft (not sure which) enough to make it rev to the moon when just cruising. We'll see, but I might put my 21 back up top, if the chain will accommodate it. It is great for slow stuff, deep snow, trees, and it's primary use, moving two people uphill (90% sled-skier).

They do have a tether. Both my 99 670x and 03 700 have tether issues occasionally - once in a while, the sled will start, but not go anywhere. Grab the cap and twist it back and forth, voila. No _problem_, but sometimes annoying. It has never taken more than a couple of twists to get it back to life.

I've not had any issues with mine (either one, but specifically the 700). It has ~4000 miles on it, ran well last I rode it. A SkiDoo mechanic friend rode it earlier this year and said it "felt a bit soft." Huh. So, it is currently getting pistons and rings. It was 122/125psi at 6000'. Not AWFUL, but maybe a bit low? Who knows. Good peace of mind, but at the same time, if you search Dootalk forums for "high mileage," you'll find that a LOT of 700s have broken the 10k mile mark. More than a couple. They seem to be pretty durable sleds.

My oil tank leaks at the seam, so I don't normally fill the bottle more than 1/2 way/beyond the seam, unless I know I have a LONG road-ride to get back to where we're skiing. Not bad enough to fix, but if I fill it then let it sit, it leaks oil a little.

Lousy mileage compared to the 670. The 670 FEELS faster than it, but in all the drag races we've had, they're pretty comparable. The 670s motor is just more abrupt. When I fill the tanks before a ride, if the 700 takes 5 gallons, the 670 takes 3-3.5. Weird. Pretty dramatic difference.

I took my windshield off. No problems, makes rolling it out of holes easier.

The 03s running boards load up with snow, as mentioned, and the holes in the 03 are bigger than on the 01. Better Boards or something is a pretty good idea; the 03 is annoying in that respect sometimes, the 99 670 is downright dangerous - and the 01 ZX boards are a LOT closer to the 99 670 than the 03 700s in terms of ability to get rid of snow.

dummmm, whatelse? I've not owned many sleds. Two, exactly. I bought these two a year and a half ago specifically for sled skiing, based on recommendations from my SkiDoo mechanic friend. He told me to get either a Summit 700 or a 98/99 670x, based on what I wanted to use them for, how much I had to spend, how much I value reliability.

I don't regret either one for a second. I paid $2750ish for mine in the fall of 08 ($1600 for the 99 a couple monts later). The sled is WAY more capable than me, and has been bomber reliable. It fouled the plugs once (after I rolled it out of a hole....).

I really like the 03 ZX. The 670x, the last of the "S" chassis, well, I _like_ it, but the ZX is just a better sled in all regards - it rides better, works better, looks better, it is just _better_. I probably did not NEED to put pistons in it, but it is good for peace of mind, and if it DOES pick up a HP or two, even better. At least I know it'll not break a piston anytime soon:).
